Ultimate Prius Mod: Aero Prius Yura Style Neo Kit

    After browsing different modifications for the Gen III Prius, I came across MoonCraft's offering that claimed to reduce the Cd to .24, "AeroPrius YuraStyle Neo" and was quite impressed:

    Neo Turbine wheel:
    "This wheel cover is only fitted on the TWS Air Verge."

    NEO Fender Trim:
    "This is for controlling the flow behind the tyre."

    NEO Slant Nose:
    "The radar cruise system is able to attach, due to the toyota emblem can attach. This device makes efficient cooling for the condenser and the inverter. Hence, this sucks the air coming from the under."

    NEO Lower Mask:
    "This can control the amount of the air, which is coming through in the radiator. This also can help to reduce a drag. The chin spoiler will help for a comfortable driving with the under body."

    NEO Spats:
    "This is for controlling a side air flow of cars. This also helps to reduce a drag. This device is attached from brackets on the wheel house."

    Neo Wing:
    This wing can make the zero lift. Due to the original spoiler makes a slightly lift force. The normal high stop light is approved."

    Neo Side Air Cutter:
    "This device is able to control the air behind the car for a lower drag. Especially, this well performs without Spats."

    NEO Mirror:
    "The lowest drag mirror. This mirror has a vortex generator to control the flow behind. This mirror is approved by the automobile inspection in Japan."

    NEO Louver:
    "The aluminum louver can attach the automatic open and shut unit as an option. This can perform the lowest drag with the slant nose, the lower mask and the inner shroud."

    Here is a video on Youtube that Prius above doing a distance competition, and traveled 638 km at 36.1km/L with 700 CC of gas remaining. That's roughly 400 miles covered at 85 miles per US gallon with 0.2 gallons left in the tank. From the video it seems that this Prius used Yokohama BluEarth tires.

    When I had asked about the Cd of .24 they had informed me the wind tunnel test was done on a 1/4 scale model.

    Lol, that's being kind. Agree, the wing and mirrors would be the only things I'd consider.

    Makes the old Honda Insight look sexy.

    Those mirrors look cooler than even the folding turn signal mirrors :)

    I notice it still has the stock antenna but no rear windshield wiper. Also has side window visors. Wonder if they each contribute to the Cd.

    I agree... sorta. These enhancements are intended for pure function leaps. Even though they do little to enhance the appeal for casual shoppers, persons such as myself find the engineering to be attractive ;)

    I'm going to assume the majority of Prius owners were not sold on the car to appear sexy as a priority... that's what the Corvette is meant for :)

    Disclaimer: I am in no way a distributor for the product; just an MPG aficionado looking to get the most mile out of my tank -- had trouble finding information so I contacted Moon Craft directly.

    Thats a lot of money for ugly. I only like the rear wing and the mirrors, but $800+ for a spoiler lol.

    If they integrated the mounts for the wheel covers, it would be acceptable for its purpose. But the exposed nuts make it look like an after-thought...

    The mirrors and the wing are the only thing IMO that look good. But for $1,800 bucks I think I can manage without them. How many fill ups will it take at a lower coefficient drag factor to offset the cost of all these products??

    That is a great question. From the YouTube video of the car it's safe to infer the average mpg US would increase to 85 mpg vs. the 50 a standard Prius is rated.

    I have actually asked tis question to Moon Craft and am awaiting an answer.

    Not really sure how much re-sale/trade-in value a modification like this would add to car (if any) either.

    No, just because the MFD reads 85 mpg doesn't mean the aero add-ons alone adds 35 mpg. Anybody can get more than 50 mpg using hypermiling techniques and some extreme hypermilers can even exceed 85 mpg.

    That's true I suppose. From the route the car took (many elevation changes) I assumed that 85 was a safe number but I will have to follow-up with Moon Craft.

    Reducing the Cd from 0.25 to 0.24, even in long distance driving, is only going to reduce the power required by a factor of 0.01 at most. That will increase your mileage from 50 to 50.5 MPG.

    So if I have this right, an average of 35 mpg gain. If I paid the $7,500 for everything it would take you an average of 455.37 tanks of gas to at an average of of 4.11 gal saved on each tank. Typical gallon of fuel is roughly $4.00 per gal. you would save $16.47 on each fill up. I fill up about twice a month so it would take me 227.68 months or roughly 18.973 years to recover the cost of this modification. My math might be fuzzy but it sure doesn't seem worth it.
