ALBANY — The Capital Region is receiving an economic jolt on its way to becoming a potential national hub for solar cell research.

The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded a $62 million grant that will help boost the U.S. Photovoltaic Manufacturing Consortium (PVMC), an Albany-based partnership led by the University at Albany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, SEMATECH and the University of Central Florida.

In addition, $57 million of the grant will be awarded directly to the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering for the work that will be done in the Capital Region.

For months, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer has pushed for approval of the SEMATECH-CNSE application to form a new photovoltaic manufacturing consortium with support from the Department of Energy’s Photovoltaic Manufacturing Initiative.

“The future is very bright for solar energy research, development and jobs in Albany. With the awarding of this massive grant, the scientists and technicians at the College of Nanoscale Science at UAlbany will once again create the jobs of the future — today,” Schumer said in a release.

With this federal funding, the partnership can increase the United States’ share of the photovoltaic technology and products market and potentially create millions of jobs over the next decade.

“This is absolutely outstanding news for the Capital Region,” Schumer continued. “... The photovoltaic manufacturing consortium has unlimited potential when it comes to advancing our technological capabilities, increasing our competitiveness abroad and, most importantly, creating jobs for middle-class families in the Capital Region.”

Apparently a Bay Area solar consortium, Stanford, and UC Berkeley also received a $50M grant to innovate solar cell technology:

A San Jose company and a joint effort between two Bay Area universities won a total of $50 million in federal funding on Tuesday as part of an ambitious government effort to slash the cost of solar power. The U.S. Department of Energy awarded $25 million to SVTC Technologies and $25 million to the Bay Area PV Consortium, a project managed by Stanford University and UC Berkeley.
