So was quoted 900$ for used actuator with labor from my mechanic. And then spoke to his assistant a week later and he quoted me at 1500$ with labor& 1 year warranty. When I mentioned the 1500$ quote to my mechanic(900$ quote). He said it might have been for an updated actuator? Is there such thing as an updated actuator for a 2008 Prius. Or was it just hog wash. Just thinking of buying part on eBay for 300$ and paying 500$ in labor. Car is only worth 4,500$ in Phoenix! Any help would be appreciated

    welcome!

idk, but i do know there are many threads and posts here regarding the actuator.

one thing to be cautious of: sometimes the used ones don't work, so that's a conversation with your mech.

Yes there is an updated part, as with most parts, there will be updated versions. The newer the better but $900 including labor is pretty good

    Welcome to PriusChat!!

Do you plan on keeping this car, or flipping it?

There was an updated actuator (not sure if the update actually fixed anything), and if purchasing used you would want the newest part # with the least amount of (reported/claimed) mileage.

At $1500 it sounds like your mechanic might be using a reconditioned unit from Dorman, which has a lifetime warranty ( ABS Control Module | 587-765 | Remanufactured ABS Pump Assembly | Dorman Products ). Though after the first year you would be on the hook for labor.

You should be able to locate the Dorman product for a little over $700 : Security Check ($715).

The OEM Toyota brake actuator (one year parts warranty, unless dealer installed) sells for around $1150 : Actuator Assembly - Toyota (44500-47141) | Toyota Parts

If you find a lower price on the Dorman or the OEM actuator, please update us here.

$900 for a used part installed with a 1 year warranty is a fair deal, if the labor only takes 5-7 hours. Used @ $1500, not so much.

If you have a DIY attitude, you could save on labor : How to Replace a Prius Actuator Assembly | Toyota Parts Center Blog

Not sure who your mechanic is, but ask Steve at PHOENIX HYBRID BATTERIES what he recommends and please tell him PriusChat sent you

Did he mention if it’s a rebuilt Dorman unit?
