i thought diesels were verboten in the eu?
one thing is media and political correctness and other thing is what ordinary german citizen can afford and is used to. In this case this particular family is loving diesel cars, do not have trust in new tech and often drive to Poland or thereabouts.
Diesel suits them. Plus in Poland which is behind Germany on many CO2 Regs, it will take time before any anti-diesel research gets noticed.
Cousin's partner said that the emissions issues are minimal comparing to heavy polluting countires. In short it depends whom we ask

i agree, how many km a year does he drive? what does petrol cost?
I cannot tell accurately. I gather that he needs to go to south 440kms each way to take care of granny once or twice a month.

I thought what i wanted would be to get him bullet proof hybrid which would have automatic gearbox and fix some ordinary car maintenance issues.
He replaced clutch on corolla once or twice. CVT transmission would help with tiredness on the motorway.
Starter few times. Fuel pump. And loads of other bits and pieces. Current car is a scrap.
I wonder how wrong can I get with used Prius and whether it can create big of a problem in a longer run.
There are way to many choices to know. Let me give US examples with a Prime: (that is what I am most familiar with)
You can charge at 240 Volts @ 16 Amps, you can also set the charger (in the car) to charge at 8 Amps which will (almost) double the time.
You can charge at 120 Volts @ 12 Amps, (80% of a standard US 15 Amp outlet) And you can charge at 8 Amps which takes 50% longer. Using a EVSE more than 16 Amps has no effect, as the EVSE and charger negotiate the highest common Amperage.
I do not know what Amperage is common in Germany (I know the 230 volts 50 Hz) Nor do I know what is common in the UK. (my understanding is that the whole house is on one main, and the devices are individually fused) Also I read Poland at one point. My electrical experience with these outlets is limited to cruise ships.

It would appear that the ultimate owner is NOT in Germany.
Why would you go that far away to incur the added cost of shipping it "home" ??
it's difficult, because prius are rated as vey reliable. but you never know how any one particular one will behave.
overall odds are pretty good, but like all mechanical things, there are some weaknesses
Yes......absolutely true in the older, high mileage ones you are looking at.
And less familiar to the intended owner too.
You NEED to get over this fascination with the Prius......unless you can afford a brand new one, or almost new.
A late model, low mileage used Corolla would seem to be a MUCH better fit for the circumstances.
