Will prices come down in the next few months or next year for the 3rd gens? I am looking into buying another used 3rd gen as long as it has less than 170k miles. I am familiar with the gasket issues, egr cleaning, manifold, etc.

What y'all think prices would be like?

Less expensive in Mississippi than in California. Prices will still remain higher than what you're used to seeing a year ago

I lived in California for a few years but I am in Michigan now. I am hoping prices would go down and I could still find decent ones with 150k miles or less.

There aren't too many decent gen 2 or gen 3 cars out in the open market. The really good ones will command a very high price, the low priced ones are usually crap. These are all approaching 10 years old or more, many of the expensive parts need to be changed.

    1. HV battery
    2. Brake Actuator/Accumulator
    3. Gen 3 head gaskets
    4. Water pumps/shocks/struts/brakes/all wear parts
    5. And exterior paint

So not sure how much all that stuff is worth to you, I would look for a Gen 4

I have experience in replacing all those besides paint. If I'm able to find a decent price, it will be my 4th 3rd gen.

You'll soon have a 4th, 5th and so on. It's addicting but I gotta tell you, you'll get tired of them LOL. I had a good 10 - 15 of these and I'm sick of them LOL. I'm moving on to bigger more comfortable hybrids now, possibly plug in. You'll be spoiled by the bigger better cars with similar gas mileage.

I’ve bought a serious number of cars for many people along with myself. I use a simple system.

After checking out the cars all different ways till Sunday I look it up with the true price guides of the banks and car dealers. I’ve got friends in both areas. I split the difference in average retail and average wholesale. I check the number of days the car has been on the lot. I get a sales-rep to pull the CarFax. All things being considered I adjust the price either way. I walk in with CA$H and make my offer OTD
(out the door). I lay out the $$$ in obnoxiously clear sight and ask what they want to do. If they start to make any noise I reach for the $$$ and get ready to walk out the door. I’ve bought a lot of cars.

    The last two(2) cars I bought were my Wife’s over-engineered pita German 325i, and My ’05 G2 ... that I love.

Just as a reminder ... I have vision difficulties ... therein is why I type big.

This is trade-in value for mine as of June 2022. 65 mpg per tank due the negligence not following open recall.

A year ago I submitted my specs and condition to Carvana (Very Good condition 2015 Pearl White 3 with less than 50K on it) and got back an offer that was tempting. It was close to what we had paid for it when we bought it as an off-lease with 22K on the odometer. It still has less than 50K on it and the prices I see on their site for a similar car today make me shudder. I was trying to buy a Volt but it did not work out. Now with gas up so much I am glad I hung on to the Prius. And with no end in sight for used car prices to level off that much, will keep it for a while longer. Still in tip top shape. Only driving about 5K miles a year now...or less.

If you bought a Chevy volt or bolt you would seriously regret it

Why is it that you believe buying a Volt or a Bolt would be a regrettable issue?!?

GM just announced a dramatic discount of $6,000 MSRP on their new Bolts.

Your best bet is to find one with a blown engine or head gasket, buy it cheap and fix it.

I think used and new vehicles prices will still be through the roof and I hope I am wrong. I don't think 1 year is enough time to work through the shortage.

In late May I sold me 11 Prius III with 212,000 miles and all brake lights on to CarMax for $2,600. The car also needed some body work. Leased a Leaf, very happy.
