No the vw xl1 outdoes it by a good bit. This one looks much more practical.

It sounds like they took part of the porsche 918 and mixed it with the x1 and tiguan. Pretty cool.

I'm just confused because the article you linked isn't about the xl1 but about the same Cross Coupe the article I linked to was. Or am I missing something?

Sounds pretty cool. This part is interesting:
No plans on producing it as is. Plug-in + diesel can't be cheap.

130mpg is due to the plugin, not actual diesel mpg...

Sorry, just adding some more information after I googled from reading your link.

    Here is the XL1
Volkswagen XL1 Test Drive - MPGs in the One Liter Car - Popular Mechanics

VW is going to build something like this, probably as an audi and in small quantities. The cross coupe sounds more like a car people may be willing to pay the premium for though.

Oh and back to differnces, in mileage tests the cross coupe
XL1 is 1L/100kmn equivalent to 235 mpg european cycle. In charge depletion the cross coupe gets 28 miles, xl1 22. EPA cycle will be reduced as it is much tougher than the european test. These are very expensive cars to produce but the cross coupe would be less expensive and faster.

About the same increment as gasoline to diesel. Of course, you'd get better fuel economy off the CS mode in a diesel.

Now, all VW has to do is to keep the car from self-destructing. :p

Under the same European test cycle the Volt/Ampera gets 196 mpg.

As you noted, their test numbers are calculated in a way that gives high estimates for larger plugin battery packs.

    Lots of details here:

If the current Tiguan TDI were imported it would be $29K IIRC, but it didn't make emmissions. Then you need to add plug in and all the other enhancements to make it a 2 liter car (1.8l/km estimated). I'm thinking that makes it at least $50K for a normal plug in. But the beast that is being proposed might be much more if exotic materials are used to get this mileage. The current one is 34/46 on the european cycles.

VW Tiguan TDI delayed until 2015 in U.S. - report

The price tag is why vw won't release it. The plug in could make it with a turbo charged gas engine, and a diesel with a start/stop system is likely.

Its a technology show case for vw's efficient car technology in a big heavy car (or small cuv:D). Remember this is a european manufacturer, and ghg seem to be the only pollutant the EU focuses on. If they were to make the car it would be much lower polluting than most diesel cars even in cs mode. In EV mode the thing could follow the new no pollution rules coming in some european cities.

Because those wanting PHEVs and HV also seem to want low pollution, VW has said it has no current plans for a diesel hybrid. That may change if gas prices go up some more, but most of the savings could come from simply being a phev. Its audi range extender is a wankel.

Tail pipe dreams, as usual for VW diesels.

I have been told by many people (fools) that the current VW diesels get better mileage than the Prius. Much better mileage. Too bad both the EPA and Canadian Govt. disagree in actual testing. ;)

I'm sure if that number is real it's using the same kind of magic that GM used to hit a 230 on its original Volt mileage. There's no way in continual driving that car is capable of 130 mpg, no way in hell.
Yep, a lot of VW diesel drivers are under some kind of self delusion in which they tell them their vehicle is capable of ludicrous numbers that have no bearing on reality. They basically take the highest number somebody can get driving like grandma and say that's what the vehicle does--similar to if you did a trip in the Prius at 75 mpg and suddenly it's a 75 mpg vehicle.

Go look at my earlier post in this thread. There is a link explaining how the European test number is calculated for the Volt/Ampera which got 196 mpg on the same test. Yes, the result is heavily biased by the size of the plugin battery pack.

So when arguing with them, I can claim my Prius gets 91 mpg! (And it doesn't even have a plug-in kit.)

I say "Trust but verify" I'll believe it when I see it in production and drive it myself (which I don't expect to do anytime soon).
