I was channel surfing and stopped on NBC. Hmm. What is this? At first I thought...hmmm...too early for Carnival in Brazil or Mardi Gras. Then I thought for some reason they were bizarrely dressed Las Vegas Showgirls.

    Nope.

    It's Miss Universe.

They said these girls were wearing costumes of their native countries. Only in a very, bad Salvador on Acid nightmare. I know a little something about ethnic dress and this wasn't it.

If beauty pageants are about poise, all of these girls deserve to win. If they can smile and keep a straight face while strutting around in these pieces of fantasy couture, they should all earn scholarships.

Oh, it's taking place in Los Angeles. That may explain the Hollywood idea of native dress. (Some of these countries I never heard of. I think they may be islands in the Caribbean.)

Hosts are Carson from Queer Eye and Nancy O'Dell from some TV magazine. Real "big stars".

I really think it's time to give beauty pageants a proper burial and move on. There must be better ways to earn a scholarship.

(And *what* is Nancy O'Dell wearing? A black lace over gray satin minidress with a train? A TRAIN? Is she insane? Well, the woman has no taste given her choice during Project Runway I)

I suppose that isn't any worse than Miss USA's "ethnic costume" of a red, white and blue jockey outfit. Complete with crop. Let's hope her evening gown shows more fashion sense. Yes, Ms. USA made the final 20. Sorta had to given it was taking place in Los Angeles.

And don't tell me none of these girls had "work done". No way all of these girls from around the world are natural Barbie clones. The only difference is height and hair color.

Guys (and some chicks) like watching hot, nicely dressed, chicks, strutting their stuff on TV (and in real life too!).

Same reason news anchors are almost always hot...

It's shallow, just like most of the Beatle's musical output, humans like that sort of thing, so what?

There is nothing wrong with some of the pageants, per se.

But representing your country in a bunch of sequin and lamé barf and the announcer saying it's your native clothing? You know there are morons out there that would believe that stuff.

I don't know what was worse....the huge maps and people painted on the huge skirts, the "butterfly" people waving wings and chiffon or the showgirls that looked like bizarre Erté come to life mannequins that rolled around in glue and sequins.

It's like Bob Macky went schizophrenic.

It's totally embarassing and, sorry, disrespectful and insulting, to the cultures represented.

    OH MY GAWD!

    This may explain it.

One of the judges is Santino Rice.

Miss Universe has hit rock bottom. Time to just put it out of it's misery.

    Of course it did.

The Miss Universe Pageant is now owned by Donald Trump. What did you expect? Class????

Didn't you notice all the Trump tie-ins during the show? (I didn't watch, but I bet they were there.)

I'd be surprised if the judges weren't sipping on a dripping cold, hand cut crystal glass of Trump Ice and then, holding the bottle up to the camera – with label fully exposed – saying, “Aaaahhhhh, only the best for the best people who deserve only the best of the best.â€

How many Trump spawn or Apprentice contestants were involved or in the audience?
I bet The Donald himself was conspicuously front-and-center in the audience. How could he possibly pass up a chance to leer at beautiful women in public forum and promote himself at the same time?

    What a dude.

I only caught the end. What made it interesting was that last week's episode of Bravo's Project Runway (my wife and I watch it, big deal) was a competition to design the evening gown for Miss USA. She was on that episode and made requests. The winner's design would be made for her. The guy who won designed pagent gowns for a living so it was like a dream come true for him.

I can understand Godiva's original post even though I didn't see that part. Interestingly, when I flipped channels, the bikini portion was on and I was glued to the set. Until that segment ended. :|

As for the "cultural" costumes, I have to wonder if Miss America walking out on stage in chaps and a ten-gallon hat waving a lasso because that's "American." And if so, was she wearing jeans under those chaps a la cowboy or nothing a la Village People?

No. She was dressed as a jocky. White pants. Shirt had blue with white stars and red. She had a satin jockey cap. And she carried a riding crop. I looked at her and went "huh"? But at least she didn't look like a Vegas show girl.

I was flipping through and saw that it was the miss universe pagent as well. Not that interesting to me, and in my 1 minute of it, I had to ask myself.... Can't the gay guy just be gay aside from being the commentator for the event? Why the flamboyancy? Does america want that in that role? If I was interested in the pagent, that would have been enough to turn the channel...

So much for wanting equal status... that guy wants to jam his thing in my face.. my face turned the channel.

It is just one more form or cheap and cheesy entertainment that so easily placates America today. Good reason to leave the TV off if that sort of thing is offensive to you.

I will watch some of the silliest movies everytime I see a bit of them on TV...Groundhog Day, Shawshank Redemption, Overboard. Sometimes you need something that just lets your mind float.

"Miss Universe" has always been the more risque' of the Beauty Pagents. It had bikinis long before "Miss America" ever did.

The attraction of "Miss America" was, at first, that small town America could end up with its favorite daughter representing America. It quickly devolved into a real competition with agents, politics, and all the other nightmarish aspects of American pop-culture. By the time the late 50's and early 60's rolled around, they gained favor because men could watch them with thier wives and it was, in a way, respectible porn.

Now that we have "Girls Gone Wild" we don't need beauty pagents.

I can't believe you actually equated Beatle's music with being "shallow". (must contain rage, must contain rage).

The Beatles are rock and roll icons. Ahead of their time. Paul wrote "When I'm 64" when he was 16 years old.

You did say 'most', so what year or years of Beatles music did you NOT find shallow?
