Maybe Toyota reads these forums. I love the car, but ..... What I don't like. The fact that you need your foot on the brake when your on level ground to prevent the motor from applying forward torque. Actually it requires quit a bit of brake peddle pressure to prevent motor current. The issue for me is, if your not paying attention the car silently starts rolling a few miles an hour. The cruse control will take the car to zero speed and hold it there. So why doesn't the normal operation do the same. At least a parameter with the option to turn it on or off. Why are there hidden options parameters? I heard there is an adjustment to the momentary directional 2-3 flashes. It's a bit quick for me. I'd like mine to be 4-5 flashes. Lets hear what you don't like, or improvements you would like to see.
You might want to do a search, there's another long thread that discusses all the 2016 Gen4 dislikes. ~My Prius goes 4 mph when I let off the brake. ~And I just hold the blinker stalk down with one long finger, and blink as much as I want. (I need the exercise. )
After about a month of ownership, hard to find anything I really don't like. If I really had to reach though, I'd say that the foot release for the parking brake doesn't feel completely natural (all other cars I've owned have a button or lever). A memory for the electric seat positions would be nice. Really reaching now...when you grab the door to close it after stepping out, sometimes your fingers can press against the weather/sound proofing strip on the door if you're not careful and I wonder how that will wear in the long run. I'm really reaching now because it's hardly an issue, but I think the brakes take a little finesse to operate smoothly if you're not used to them. These are really nitpicks though.
Agree about the brakes. Mine seem to act differently each time I drive. Sometimes very grabby; and other times the pedal feels overly "mushy." Something to do with the re-gen? Those things are all the Prius oddities that I've never experienced before; being a first-time owner. Overall, it's a great car. I've overcome any little gripes or discomforts. (But don't get me started (again) about the Toyo tire noise.. )
I think the brakes thing is weird because it's a case of having to constantly modulate them as you decrease speed. It is a little strange, and they can feel very grabby depending on what you're used to. I haven't really noticed the tire noise much, although it is there. I think with quiet tires this car might be the quietest car I've ever driven especially in EV mode. Also heard some people talking about wind noise but that's another area that really hasn't bothered me much.
The brakes in my car seem to be most grabby when the car is cold, and first starting out. Especially when going down an incline. I'm kind of used to it... but if I ever let my sister drive my Prius, it might toss her out of the seat. And I have also noticed the modulating issues that hb mentioned. Every day is an adventure! l can live with it, but it is definitely strange when compared to my previous Camry.
Well, all I have to compare it to are cars I've owned in the past, the brakes feel a little non-linear to me. Closest is a Dodge Ram 1500 we owned about 15 years ago that felt like the wheels would nearly almost lock up when you just tapped them. The Prius brakes (depending on the speed) can go from ultra-smooth to near lockup as you slow down if you maintain the same pressure, so you have to adjust the pressure a bit to keep the braking smooth. It's more subtle than it sounds though, and it doesn't really bother me that much, it's just something you adapt to after a little while.
i can't compare, after 11 years, they feel normal. they are a little grabby at very slow speeds, but that might even be the rust on the rotors.
I don't really mind the brakes - keeping in mind that they're a combination of regen and disks. Compared with other cars I test-drove, yes, the Prius' brakes may not be quite up with the very best for feel, but they're doing a lot more - and certainly better than the worst which was the Golf which was so "sudden death" as to be difficult to modulate. I don't really like the foot Park Brake - it's hard to tell when it's really on hard enough, and if it isn't, and you push it a bit further, it just goes off again - CRAZY. (I also have no idea how you could use it to do a handbrake turn or start a drift, but I don't drive like that any more.)
I find the Gen 4 brakes grabby but I don't drive it every day. The Gen 3 is probably the smoothest after the update. The Gen 3 pre-update (i.e. when the car was less than a year old) was grabbier but not as bad as Gen 4.
I agree with everyone's brake explanation's. Historically Prius braking, regeneration / mechanical brakes has had a bump at the transition point. But the Gen 4 is a bit different than my Gen 2 was. There is now a noticeable loss of braking, at the point the battery is fully charged. But I guess it's the price to pay for brakes that went 200K in my Gen 2 and were never touched.
I don't like the message telling you that the "Lane Departure Warning System is un-available bellow 32 miles per hour"!! Ok, ok... I get it! But every time I drive the car I am forced to see that message? Give me a break Toyota. How about the box to check - "Don't Show This Message Again" That's my ONLY complaint about the car. For me... that's pretty good!
I am struggling to get a decent score when coming to a stop. My 92-96 for starting and coasting usually ends up sinking to 60-70 overall due to whatever I'm doing wrong. On those occasions when the Prius does rate my stopping at 90+, I can't for the life of me think what I did differently. My only other complaint is that the random shuffle on the software that plays music from a USB doesn't seem to be all that random. Of 300 songs or so, the same 10-15 keep cropping up. I know from my days as a programmer that there's no such thing as truly random in computing and that you'll always get patterns, but whatever they did to simulate 'random' isn't working all that well. All in all though I'm loving my new car. Massive improvement on my old Prius.
For me it's the lack of extendable sun visors. I'm reduced to kludging together a homemade version or spend good money on a bad after-market extender. What would it have cost Toyota to make this feature standard. $5?
I agree! The brakes drive me crazy!!! If I hold the brake at the same pressure for a couple seconds, the car slams on the brakes, then lets go, slams on the brakes, again and again. It is so annoying and I never noticed it while test driving. My gen 2 brakes are touchy, not grabby, but they don't do the slamming on the brakes and letting go. They are gradual and the car stops quicker than the gen 4. I still haven't replaced the brakes (or shocks) after 241,000 miles being the first owner. They seriously messed up on the gen 4 brakes! Another problem is the tire noise. It's a constant drone on the freeway. I wish Entune would let you drive while putting in a destination. There is a rattling noise in the right rear passenger c pillar. Wish there was a built in hard drive for songs. I need seat memory 3 way and a power passenger seat. I'd really like cooled front seats although that might be a little too nice for the price. The front SofTex seats are not comfortable on a long drive. I still love the car!
I bought this since I also found this an issue. It mostly helps, but is flimsy and ugly. I'd recommend it though.
