If you dont own a Prius

    1) you are more stressed out when driving.

    2) you cant enjoy the most advanced technology on the road today

    3) and the worst thing...you are forced to do things you wouldnt have to do if you owned a Prius.

Thieves take gas-and-dash to a whole new level in Rochester
54 gallons of diesel stolen from station's underground tank

    BY CHRISTIAN HILL

    THE OLYMPIAN

The Thurston County Sheriff's Office is looking for a couple of thieves who stole 54 gallons of diesel fuel from an underground fuel storage tank at Larry's Chevron in Rochester. They made off with the fuel using an elaborate contraption housed inside an old horse trailer, Chief Criminal Deputy Dan Kimball said.

The gas station owner, Larry Angwood, interrupted the thieves before they could make off with more fuel. The horse trailer contained a 300-gallon storage tank, Kimball said.

"These guys were basically trying to get away with the whole gas station," he said.

The incident occurred this month in the early morning when Angwood noticed the trailer pulled by an older- model Dodge pickup in the parking lot of the station at 9525 U.S. Highway 12 S.W.

The two thieves, described by Kimball as white males in their mid-40s, told Angwood they were having a tire problem. As he turned away, he heard the cover to the underground storage tank close.

Angwood approached the vehicle again, but the two men drove off. He notified law enforcement. Angwood couldn't be reached for comment Monday.

Soon after, a sheriff's deputy came across a horse trailer that matched the description provided by Angwood. It sat abandoned on Hilt Street, off U.S. 12 a mile or so from the gas station.

Inside, deputies found the 300-gallon tank, a generator, a pump, hoses and a hole cut in the floor, a set-up that allowed the men to directly pump fuel from underground storage tanks. The trailer was insulated so the noise of the machinery wouldn't attract attention.

"They pumped this 54 gallons in two or three minutes, so it actually runs quite efficiently," Kimball said.

Deputies are checking with other agencies in Lewis County to see if previous thefts have occurred.

Kimball said high gas prices, which have moderated somewhat in recent days, haven't led to a spike in fuel thefts. Thieves typically drive off after a fill-up from a pump that doesn't require pre-payment, he said.

"It's different, there's no doubt about it," Kimball said of this case. "I've never see a gas drive-off where they're trying to get away with 300 gallons of fuel."
