What is this piece?

    My 2007 Prius Touring came with a black plastic piece in the glove box that looked like it could have been a cover for a radio hole years ago. It is about 3.5 inches by 10 inches and one end is square but the other is not, thus forming a trapezoid. Anyone know what this is or where it came from?

    It's a shelf for the upper glove box. You'll notice it's shaped just like the inside of the glove box. If you look on both sides there are channels to slide it into.

    Be sure to put it in the slots correctly, othewise you will have a strange rattle that is very difficult to locate.

    If you remove that plug, you will find a threaded nut that will accept a short eye bolt that is in with the spare tire tools in the trunk. If you get stuck in the mud or snow and need to pull it out, you have to screw this in and pull on it.

    I do like the idea of the 40 terawatt phaser cannon though.

    I think they use the fitting that goes in that hole to lash the car to the ship when it's in transit.

    This is in place of the towing hook that most vehicles have underneath the front bumper. When you attach the towing eye, it screws into the car's frame so that the stress of towing is transferred to the frame (which is pretty much rock-solid) rather than to the body panels (which could accidentally be pulled off).

    Yes, Molechaser's correct.

    Also please note that this eye-bolt towing method is designed to be THE LAST RESORT and should not be the first thing that comes to mind if you need a minor tow.

    Again, from Joe's Diner, here's the eye-bolt on top. It's located under the cargo area in the back:

    I want to add some caution about that eye-bolt port.

    My sons and I were at a Hyperfest a few years ago. The Honda S2000 has that same setup. This poor fellow had an S2000 with 30-day tags on it. It was used, but it looked mint. He had some problem that required a roll-back to take it out.

    They screwed the eyebolt in and hooked the winch to it. They were pulling it on to the roll-back, and the cable has some twist in it. It twisted the eye-bolt out. It did it quite fast. The S2000 goes flying off the roll-back and slams into a pickup. The owner was devistated.

    I'm not sure I'd ever trust one of these. Maybe to pull out of a ditch, but not up on a roll-back!

    The manual cautions you to screw it in tightly using the handle of the lug wrench for leverage.
