Very disappointed that I lose 25% of my electrical miles when the temperature drops but when will my electrical charge go back up to the 12 miles plus I got when I first got the car last summer?

Yeah! This summer my best starting average was 18.2 now After a brutal winter I am at 8.9 starting and winter isn't over yet,
Enjoy your car it will be lows in the - below every day this week again!
Spring is on it's way, may be we will slowly begin to climb the other way in a couple of weeks getting back to 18.2 by. Mid August!
Enjoy your car it will recover! :D

It varies from locations and driving habits. We've had a fair amount of single digit days around here, but my PiP is still showing 11.0 EV miles.

How does your driving change during the winter? That would be something worth considering in addition to temperature changes.

With the mild winter we've had so far, there's been little or no change in the estimate for my car. With nothing as far as cold or wet to make a difference, it feels like even the drive stays the same - that is - no slower, no faster, nothing different.

It could be in areas with cold and precipitation of various types, there's a difference in not only temperature but a difference in how your car is driven.

precipitation will definitely affect distance on that particular drive, but cold temps seriously affect charging, storage capacity and discharge ability. you sandiego guys, wouldn't know, no need to rub it in!:p

With all the hills around Tarrytown, NY, and the traffic lights along the otherwise high-speed parkway I take on my commute, I'm lucky to see 8.5 miles at full charge, maybe 9.5 in warmer weather.

I have noticed that keeping track of my actual miles driven in EV proves that the EV miles indicated are an estimate. Better, they are a reading of the amount of available charge which is expressed in miles. The actual miles driven in EV can be greater than is indicated in warm weather and in winter the miles can disappear much faster than the odometer shows them to go. You have two trip odometers just so that you can easily track the miles actually driven per charge.

It is instructive. Just set, for example, the trip odometer number 3, to zero at the start of a trip with a full charge. Then you can easily compare the actual EV miles driven with the indicated EV miles.

Last year, I went to a low of 10.9 EV miles. This year with the mild winter and nearly zero precipitation, I've been hovering around 13 as if it was summer all year long. Temps right now are high 60's to low 70's.

I plotted about 14 months of data in a different EV.
In general, the temperature loss starts in earnest around 50-55 degrees and is a fairly steady slope down. So your range should increase gradually up to 55, it will continue improving after that, but at a much slower rate.

    Thank you!

I am sure that everyone here in Washington is proud of the Seahawks. It was not because Denver played poorly. It was because Seattle played better.

I wonder if battery age is also a factor, or relative lack of age. I bought my '13 PiP in late December and have been seeing 13.1 EV miles each morning to start off after overnight charge. In the time since, temperatures have swung between -12F to upper 20s but the charge level seems consistent. The battery is not that old yet.

    Mike,

Even though the estimated Battery Miles lower in the winter, I can still get almost to the office, just like the summer.
The difference is I may turn on the heater which starts the ICE and extends the battery.

So don't let the estimated Battery Miles bother you. After my 2nd winter, I gave up worrying.

nah, i'm at 12.6 right now. you'll be up around 17 or 18 this summer. it's more to do with your typical drive, style and topography.

I was at around 10.5 miles (estimate shows). I checked my tire pressure and it was below the suggested psi. I added more air and it is now around 11 miles.

The efficiency dropped with these multiple snow storms. I am getting 120 MPGe on electric and 50 MPG on gas. My first year average was 132 MPGe and 57 MPG.

Despite the drop, I think my PiP is doing much better than other EVs or regular Priuses. I love the best of both worlds, only possible by using both fuels in synergy.
