It wasn't so much the advice he provided for me, it was more that I knew I always had a safe place to land. I was nothing but trouble in my younger years, and both of my parents never turned their back on me. If I had such a child, I don't know if I would've continued to let the child reside in my house, with such a complete disregard of boundaries and respect.

Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there!

"Don't ever worry about getting something on you that you can wash off."

I received this advice when I was too grossed out to help my mother, who was throwing up after surgery when she was in the hospital. It gave me the perspective to be able to dive in and help.

This advice continues to help me on a metaphorical level. Go where I don't want to go, do what I don't want to do, if it helps somebody or needs to be done. I can "wash" or restore whatever will need to be restored later.

The other good advice he gave me was,
"Never mess with somebody smarter than you."
(Fortunately, he encouraged me to believe that very few were smarter than me, but to be very careful when I found them.)

When starting a project (i.e., assembling a swingset, moving a wood pile, anything that would be on a Honey-Do List), the first and most important thing to do is get a cold beer.

Will one beer work or should they be replaced as needed?

He had some good, some bad.

Probably the best advice was "do it right the first time".
Which was a welcome mat at his mother's house.

Then there was some lovely ones like "beer before liquor, never sicker", "treat a whore like an angel, and an angel like a whore", and "just let it go, she'll calm down tomorrow".

I got that advice from my stepfather.

My real father taught me that with freedom comes responsibility. He taught me that just because something is legal, doesn't make it right, and just because something is illegal, doesn't make it wrong. He also taught me the value of good, honest work.

He also said that if a girl smells, to not date her. :D

That's good advice -- but did you need it?

Not at the time, but later, it seemed like sound advice.

not so much advice but a lesson:

if you make a mistake, it's best to make things right- no matter how hard that may be or how much pride you have to swallow.

i met my dad a little over 3 years ago.

His most memorable words of advice? Two words, uttered on the brink of death (he really said this):

"LIGHTEN UP!" Death's not the end of the world, he said. he was quite the jokester and he wanted to hear one-liners rather than hear us cry.

    I miss you Dad!

You know, as close as I was to my dad, he never said anything, you know, classic in the advice giving world. However, he did influence me. Because of him, I love old movies (1930s era, that sort of thing); I love Jazz music, and Big Band music because of him.

    Will that do?

Well my father was an electrician commercial and residential and talked shop all the time I was his helper (gopher) and the first thing he taught me was:

when making an electrical connection in regards to a Ground wire, " First to make last to break"

that saying has always stuck with me.

however this refers to house wiring not on autos

And the funny one was " Never drink beer that was left on the back porch " :D
