    IN DEFENSE OF THE GENERAL
    April 30, 2005

The General has been taking more than its share of hits this past month. Automotive publications, including this one, have been quick to write about what's wrong with General Motors. So, the LA Car Blog wants to end this month with a recap of what's right with GM.

    Bob Lutz

GM's former chairman of North American Operations and current chairman of Global Product Development Activities brought a spark to the corporation that had been missing for too long. The automotive press has always been a fan of Lutz because he's a car guy and because of his straight-talking style at press conferences. He made no bones about what he thought about the interior designs of some of the GM vehicles. His most positive impact has been on the products of General Motors. He had the interior designers study VW-Audi interiors, and the results are just now coming to fruition. He turned around Pontiac's design approach 180 degrees, and they are now starting to produce some of the most handsome products in the entire corporation. He understood that everyone didn't have to like Cadillac's Art & Science design, but that if a significant segment really liked it, it would sell. In his new position, we expect Lutz to have a further positive impact on the General's products.

    Cadillac

When Cadillac first introduced the novel Art & Science design in its Evoq concept car, the critics wondered if Japanese origami experts took over the division's design studio. Audi's TT was all the rage at the time, and compared to the TT's rounded design, the Evoq looked like it was designed by folding sheets of paper into the shape of a car. Since then, Cadillac's Art & Science design has spread throughout its entire line, and they are some of the freshest, most original-looking designs coming out of Detroit. Even Lincoln's design chief expressed admiration for Cadillac's bold new look. Along with the new look came a new advertising campaign that featured Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" song. Then, rap artists started noticing Cadillacs. All of a sudden, Cadillacs are cool again.

    Trucks

GM has always made good trucks, and the current line-up is no different. Moreover, some of the latest ones are among the best-looking trucks around. One highly regarded automotive critic asked recently why GMC even exists. GMC exists because people buy the products, and they buy the products because GMC trucks look good and work well. The same goes for Chevy trucks. For the longest time, the import companies didn't even bother to compete with the domestic truck makers. That's changed, but it'll still be a very uphill battle before they alter the dominance the domestics have in the American truck market.

    OnStar

Credit General Motors for revolutionizing the automotive satellite service industry. OnStar offers its customers an added layer of safety, security, and convenience. If you lock your keys in the car, you can call OnStar to unlock it. If you're injured in an accident, OnStar can help you get an emergency vehicle to your exact location. The same technology also can track your car if it's stolen. OnStar can even be contacted to help you find a restaurant or stores in the area. A few other manufacturer now have their own version of satellite service, but OnStar is still the best.

    Hummer

Hummers have not been the favorite vehicles among some segments of the environmental community. Much of that has to do with the size of the H1 and H2 models, and their gas mileage ratings. Indeed, with gas prices continuing to march up into the stratosphere, Hummer sales have taken a hit. GM hopes to mitigate that with the introduction of the H3 - a smaller, more fuel-efficient Hummer. There are two other things that make Hummers stand out, however. One is their off-road prowess. Hummers are outstanding off-road vehicles. Secondly, Hummers are at the cutting edge of SUV design. In particular, the H2 is a strikingly handsome-looking SUV. It's slab sides and Department of Defense silhouette is trend-setting. We now see Nissan copying it on its latest Pathfinder. Ditto Rover in its new LR3. Even Jeep is showing the Hummer's influence in its latest concept vehicles.

    GTO

Last year, I called the new GTO is one of the great performance buys of 2004. This year is no different. The new GTO offers BMW 6-Series performance, handling and comfort for less than half the price. We are talking about a grand touring car with a 400 horsepower V8 motor, rear-wheel drive, four-wheel independent suspension, a superb interior, and room for four in comfort At its actual transaction price (below $30,000), the car is even more of a bargain.

    G6

This is the first Pontiac that is completely devoid of its body-cladding side molding recent heritage. It doesn't seem to show up on the radar screen of most Toyota Camry and Honda Accord buyers, but its design is more attractive than either. Its the first of a line of very attractive Pontiacs that will be coming our way. And if you think the G6 looks good...

    Solstice

The Solstice concept car is a knockout. If the production version looks as good - and if Pontiac can keep the base model under $20,000 as promised - GM should have a major hit on hand. Also right on the money was GM's decision to have the Solstice the subject of a public relations project on the hit TV reality show, "The Apprentice." So far, the General is making all the right moves with this sizzling-looking sports car.

    Sky

Another great-looking sports car concept car, based on the Kappa platform shared with the Solstice. Word has it that the Saturn Sky has gotten the General's green light for production.

    Cobalt

The two-door SS coupe is particularly appealing, but all the models share an interior that looks like it came straight out of a Volkswagen Passat. If this is the direction of GM interiors to come, it's a good thing.

    Corvette

We can count on Chevrolet to get this one right. They've never made a bad one. The latest C6 Corvette is, not just the best buy in a sports GT car, it's a world class car.

GM is a giant of a corporation. It's not easy to turn a big battleship around. The same is true for General Motors. But, make no mistake about it - GM is turning around. The aforementioned should be ample proof that, for all the critics and criticism, GM is doing more than a few things right.

:pukeright: They've got to be joking. Ignoring the
environmental ramifications of this vehicle for
a moment, the Hummer, no matter which incarnation,
is the fugliest thing on the planet.
For example, my friends and myself have given
the bird to every Hummer (all the varieties) that
we've seen. See F*** You and
    your H2
for examples of people who despise the
    Hummer.
In case you wonder if this vehicle deserves this
much vehemence, the answer is a resounding yes.

I can't believe it's true that bending sheet metal can be considered such a bold step. Put a bow on a pig and it's still a pig.

The whole concept of "revolutionizing" a model simply by changing the exterior stopped working on me when I saw the Prius commercial stating that nothing significant has changed in car design since the car was invented. And I laugh when I see the "retro thunderbird" and the "retro mustang" because I know it's Ford's way of saying, "uh yeah, we couldn't think of anything new this year."

OMG... here we are in an energy crisis which is growing daily and we should applaud GM for their gas guzzling pickups and sports cars??

who gives a rats A** who makes the best performance car? its extremely difficult for me to see any good in a company that seems to ignore everything around them.

So the G6 doesn't show on the radar of Camray and Accord buyers. For a good reason. reliability of all GM's

First off, this is a great article. We are just throwing tomatos at you because this is like praising Bill Clinton at a George Bush rally (or visa-versa).

    :tomato:

I can't rag on companies that make performance cars. I'd love to have a Ferrari, Porche or Corvette.

If GM wants to be known for that, God bless 'em.

    But I remember 1973.

I remember my mother waiting in lines to buy gas on the odd days. We had a GM station wagon (an Oldsmobile, I believe) and it went through gas like Will Ferrell goes through beer.

    What did they learn?

    NOTHING.

I know it "takes time to turn a big ship" but GM isn't the U.S.S. Eisenhower, it is the Titanic.

    They think they are invincible.

Go back in time to the early 90s. George Bush, Sr. got us tangled up in the middle east. Many believed that stopping on the borders of Baghdad left the issue unresolved. After the Clinton era, there was a pretty good chance that a Republican would be elected.

Bush, Jr. was a prime candidate to finish his father's war.

Would a war in the middle east increase the cost of gas or decrease it?

And not only did our own decissions effect prices, China started to buy more oil.

GM never saw the iceberg coming or they thought that they could "push on through."

As long as GM markets to the heart of the American Bell Curve and not just the performance end, they owe it to it's clients to make a car that is safe, fuel efficient and stylish.

I don't feel bad for GM. They are poor students and this is capitalism (Darwinism) at work.

Its too bad that GM has modeled their esistance after the ten-ton dinosaur instead of the aerodynamic and fuel efficient turtle.

An animal that can't respond to its surroundings is pretty much going to DIE.

I sincerely hope the same is true for the car market. Except American car companies have the US government on their side.

Let's hope for Darwin's theory to work on GM....

In addition to what others have expressed, there is something else that highlights what is "not right with GM" (and, conversely, what is "right with Toyota and Honda"):

    AP
Auto Suppliers Trust in GM at Low Level
By Dee-Ann Durbin, Associated Press Writer
Survey: Auto-Parts Suppliers' Trust in General Motors Corp. Is at Its Lowest Level in 15 Years

DETROIT (AP) -- Auto-parts suppliers' trust in General Motors Corp. is at its lowest level in 15 years, according to a survey by a Michigan consulting firm.

Eighty-five percent of the suppliers questioned who work with GM reported a poor working relationship and just 3 percent said they have a good or very good relationship. Fifty-three percent of suppliers said they prefer not to work with the world's largest automaker, saying the company has little regard for suppliers' financial stability.

    ....

Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. fared best in the survey. Sixty-three percent of suppliers have a good or very good relationship with Toyota and 53 percent say the same about Honda. Results for Nissan Motor Co. were mixed; 75 percent have a poor or adequate relationship and 25 percent have a good or very good relationship.

Just 3 percent of the suppliers who work with Toyota and Honda said they would prefer not to do business with those companies, compared to 36 percent of those who work with Ford and 29 percent of those who work with Chrysler.

Several auto suppliers have declared bankruptcy in recent months, hurt by high steel and oil prices and lack of business from GM and Ford, who have cut production as their market shares have fallen. Last week, Ford agreed to bail out its chief supplier, Visteon Corp., by taking back 24 unprofitable plants and paying hundreds of millions of dollars in restructuring costs.

Henke said all automakers pressure their suppliers to lower costs. But Toyota and Honda are better at working with suppliers to ensure that happens, he said.

Toyota sends its engineers to suppliers' plants to work together on ways to cut costs instead of threatening to use a cheaper supplier, Henke said. He also said Toyota doesn't punish suppliers for increasing their profit margin on a part as long as they're cutting costs. As a result, 73 percent of the suppliers who work with Toyota rate the company as one of their most preferred customers.

"One of the things that differentiates Honda and Toyota from everybody else is the fact that they have a philosophy of respect for the individual," Henke said. "It doesn't matter if its their employees, their customers, their dealers or their suppliers."

When I first saw the Honda Ridgeline, I thought that it's good for the consumer that Honda is in the Truck market. Now that I've read this latest article, I realize that the trucks parts suppliers are soon going to have a little leverage over manufacturers. "Treat us with respect and pay us on time or find a different supplier. We don't need you anymore."

On both the consumer and supplier fronts, GM's soon going to be hurting even more.

I'm as big a GM fan as can be! My grandmother drove a 68 Pontiac LeMans, my dad drove a 67 Pontiac Catalina (with a 421), and I own a 72 Pontiac GTO with a high compression 400. Up until recently, I was driving a 95 Firebird with a350 LT1, thus the name LT1bird. However, GM has changed and I don't really like the direction it's going. Instead of builing on the very popular Camaro/Firebird platform, GM (Bob Lutz) decided that those types of cars are too low-brow for today's consumers. I guess I have to thank him for pulling the plug on the F-body twins :x I agree that the GTO is a step in the right direction.... but it's ugly....butt ugly. I'm actually ashamed that the Australlian Monaro could actually be compared or even share in the rich heritage of the GTO. As far as I'm concerned I'd like to kick the "ol General in the NUTS!" Thank God they're still building Corvettes... or I'd have to dissown GM.

Sorry, I guess I just had to vent.

    Just my .02

And Aroyo...if you look at your chart, the peak was during the "irrational exuberance" as the chairman of the SEC Mr Greenspan stated. The core value of this company is still there, you want to put charts up, show the dividends the company has paid out...Still though I want to make money now, so I got some Toyota Stock, so keep chatting up that stock baby and make me some money, thanks
