Can anyone tell me what this jack is for on my 2006?

Oh, nevermind, I figured it out! Its to play DVD's through the MFD! :D

It works folks! The analog video input IS NTSC standard composite video! B)
Now, I guess I need to change my backup camera pushbutton switch to a toggle switch, because my finger got too tired holding the switch in to watch Stargate Atlantis! The only downside I've found so far is that you will always see that banner that says "Check surroundings for safety". It was fine when playing things in widescreen format, but it may be annoying when watching standard 4:5 stuff.I doubt there's anyway to hack the MFD to remove the banner, but who knows?
It was really neat watching it, because I could also jack the audio into the 2006's AUX audio input! B)

Very glad that you live in Florida. Be sure to warn us west coasters if you ever decide to "drive" here. Dogs, cell phones and grooming are bad enough.

Well, I don't have a cellphone, a dog, or groom myself while I drive, and I'm CERTAINLY not recommending this mod for use while driving! Jeesh! :(

No, I'm sorry, but I was being facetious. I spliced into the backup camera video connection, and added the jack. The wires we're concerned with are the red and black wires on M14, the large connector on the back of the MFD. The red wire is the + video, and the black one to the left of it is actually black shrinkwrap on a bare shielded wire. Both are part of a single coaxial video cable. You just need to remove the electrical tape thats in the way, cut the red wire, loop it through the jack, and tap onto the shielded wire for a video ground:

Yea, I'm a geek, I admit it. But, us geeks have saved planet earth from dozens of alien attacks, and I only play around with this car stuff as a distraction in between off-world missions.

Just to clarify, my main intent in this exercise was NOT to add DVD playback capabilities to my car, something I have little, if any, use for. However, I thought that it needed verification that, in fact, the analog video input on the 2006 MFD IS NTSC composite video. This opens our cars up for all sorts of add-ons that we didn't have before, because of the digital RGB+ sync input on previous years. Also, I think that it proves that, with a little more work, the CANVIEW will probably be adaptable to the 2006, using an RGB-to-composite converter of some kind. That may be overly simplistic, but with such a variety of devices out there that output in composite video, the uses are endless. Or, now that we know the camera is also NTSC, maybe you want to install a recorder in the loop, to get that guy's license number behind you whose been trying to run your Prius out of the HOV lane? Or, connect the camera to an RF transmitter, so you can nanny-cam the Prius?

    Good work again, Keydiver.

Now we just have to figure out where Toyota muxes in the "Check surroundings for safety". I only need to be told that once, not every time! I guess this would have to be left for when the car goes out of warranty. Maybe a 2006 MFD will come up on ebay someday soon at a reasonable price for hacking experiments.

Great work again! Can I ask (beg?) you to add this extra bit to your initial write up on how to rig the camera to turn on with the switch? If you can email me the whole thing, I'd be happy to host it on my Prius pages where everybody can link to it. And here I thought I was done pulling apart my dash for a bit. Nope!

Email and Prius links in my sig...

X-10 had software that was basically a motion detector connected to a camera that you could configure to email you if motion was detected under set parameters, it would then email snapshots from the live video. this setup was designed as a security measure for your home, but...

wouldnt it be great to setup an internet connect in your car, then have it email gps and screen captures from the video in the case the car is tampered with... that would be cool.

good job keydriver....i dont know about putting the jack right in the middle of the center dash..i'd put it on the side where its hidden.

this is all for the "coolness" factor of the prius. great job.

Have there been any updates on a more detailed "how-to" on this mod? I would love to try this now that I am a little more confident in working with the MFD wiring.

    TIA.

    Brian.

If you look at the VERY bottom of Darell's writeup:
    Backup Camera Mod
you will see that he added some details from an email I sent him. The video input line from the camera is a simple coaxial cable, just like the ones you would use to interconnect your A/V components at home. Its just a simple matter of intercepting the "hot" of the video, and looping it through a jack.

Thanks for the reply. I can see why I am not an EE. Sorry but that goes way beyond my abilities to fish a wire across the dash with a clothes hanger and solder together a few wires to a button to do the reverse thing.

Maybe someday if Darell wants to help all of us regular-folk out with a full picture tutorial (and of course a few of his shortcuts) then I will attempt it.

Thanks again. Oh and if you're ever in the LA area and want to come over my house for some bbq tofu or something, maybe we can get together and you can "help" me do this. :)
