What's Your Prius Sustainabiliy Index?

    Most Prius owners are concerned about the consumption of gasoline and rightfully boast about high mileage numbers. But I've also noticed some folks who drive a lot of miles, which is counterproductive.

    I propose we calculate our Prius Sustainability Number to see who is really doing the best for the planet. Divide your miles/month by your lifetime mpg to get your number of gallons/month. Lowest number wins.

    My calc:
    9066 miles / 7.5 months = 1209 miles/mo
    Lifetime mpg = 51.9 mpg
    1209/51.9 = 23.3 gal/mo (88.2 liters/mo)

    I wish I had a shorter commute. Who is the Prius sustainable index winner? Post your numbers.

    Putting on an average of nearly 50 miles a day gives me 29.02 gallons/month.

    Definitely an interesting metric -- I've plugged it into my PDA spreadsheet.

    Current value (after ~4.5 months) is 17.33 Gallons Per Month.

    My freind drives his F-250 with the big turbo diesel around 200 miles a month. That comes to about 13 gallons per month. He's got me beat.

    Here's a web site that has a calculator that will show what you will save over a non hybrid. You plug your old car in and your average MPG in the old thing, and then you pick which hybrid you want to get or already own. It not only gives you your gasoline and money savings, it also gives you how many pounds of CO2 you are saving by not putting them into the air.

    Well, this metric clearly shows that the most sustainable Prius Driver is a Dead Prius Driver.

    That's funny, but it's true. Although I love my Prius, and my wife had wanted a Toyota RAV4 EV, the best that we can do without staying home all the time is to ride our bikes.

    Yes, but only if the dead driver is creamated.
    Taking up valuable land for a grave is not sustainable.

    From an emissions standpoint even high mileage (not high mpg) Prius drivers make out better, but from a basic oil consumption standpoint it comes down to how few gallons per month you use.

    I'm nearing the end of a tank (450 miles @ 49.3MPG), but here are my figures as of last fill-up (03/06/05):

    192 days
    6.4 months
    177.43 gallons
    27.72344 gallons per month (approx)

    212 gallons.

    sooo that be 257 dvided by 30.5 = 8.42 months = 25.4 gallons a month.

    or since winter 170 days and 89.14 gallons = 16 gallons a month

    I believe we're looking at this backwards.

    Assuming that people aren't driving more than they have to.

    The best environmental scenario is the one where everyone who has to drive long distances drives a Prius.

    A Prius Driver with a 3 mile commute would help the environment most by trading vehicles with someone who commutes 100 Miles a day in a Suburban.

    Since I got the car August 13 I have put 216.146 gallons in the car as of March 15 so that is 7 months that would be 30.878 gallons per month. Avg mpg is now 50.546 mpg including the fill up on March 26 th. Total gallons as of the 26th is 223.4 gallons for 11292 miles. FWIW

    The Sustainability Index is a much better indicator than kmL-1 (kilometers per Liter) or mpg.

    7000 mi, 5.0 months of ownership
    Lifetime mpg = 52.0 7000 mi/5.0 months = 1400 mi per month
    1400 mi per month/52.0 mpg = 26.92 gallons per month

    My commute = 30 mi, Wife's commute = 50 mi. We now car pool together. So 26.92 gallons/2 people = 13.46 gallons per person per month.

    A Sustainability Index needs a factor for emissions.
