How many pips are left on the fuel gauge when you fill up?

I wait until just after I've used 10 gallons worth, so the number of pips varies...

When the last one starts to blink and beep, I fill up. Sometimes sooner if it's convenient.

I fill up on the last one. I don't wait till it starts to blink. I did once but I don't want to risk it. That would be too embarrassing to be stuck on the side of the road in a Prius thats out of gas.

    CAN-View for the win :)

I start to think about looking for gas at 7%, and then I'll consider going to a gas station at 5%. :D

BTW, there are many threads on this question. Try a search.

Thanks- I'll take a look. This may be a dumb question, but when you talk about percentages, where are you getting those numbers?

1 pip. Too many horror stories about people running out of gas here.

Two pips generally, but sometimes at three, if I'm planning a long trip.

I usually fill up sometime after I hit the 2 pip mark, but last tank I let it go to 1 pip, since I was at a point in my trip where I could fill up on the New York State thruway or 10 miles further down the road when I got into New Jersey where the gas was cheaper. I've only filled up 5 times so far. I left on my 'long trip' at 5 pips; I might have filled up 'at home' if I'd been down to 3 pips.

When I've driven my allocation of miles for the tank. Usually 550 miles.

Last pip not blinking if I can avoid it. I did mess up once and I had to coast in.

By the way if those are the pips, where is Gladys Knight?

Between 1 and 2 pips. Sometimes I'll fill up if I'm close to that mark and I suspect the prices will shoot up the next day.

It depends on my roundtrip miles.

I have no problem waiting until the pip is blinking - and then a few miles after that. However, it FREAKS my wife and daughter out when the light beeps and the ADD FUEL message pops up!! So if they are in the car I fill up as soon as the BEEP sounds off. :p

    BTW, Presto... awesome car stuff!!

Interesting. I have a completely different strategy. I fill up every other Sunday, since I can get about 2 weeks of commute + errands on a tank. Usually, 2-3 pips are still on at that point.

I'm about to take a long road trip, and even then, I have to fill up when there's gas to be had (some of the roads are lonely Nevada roads...). But I doubt I'll let it get to 1 pip.

How can you tell when you have used 10 gallons? The 04 guess guage only reads correctly when it is full or empty.

I have never been able to put more than 9.5 in my 04, so I'm a 1 or 2 pip guy.

CANVIEW is a module that can be installed that give MUCH more information about the parameters, conditions, and states of the car. that includes a gas gauge that runs from 0-100% in 2½ % increments. so readings would run 100,97,95,92,90,87 etc.

before you ask where you can get one, afaik you cannot. it WAS only compatible for the 04's and 05's.

i fill up at the same station so my fillups vary. if not going on any extended trips i usually start thinking about gas when i hit about 7% which is about 30 miles after the last bar starts to blink (it usually starts blinking at 12%)

2 pips usually, unless I see a really great buy on gas and am below 1/2 of tank! That has not happened but once since I bought my Prius.
