    Hello All
I decided to sleep a little in my Prius on a warm day
I turned turned the car on to engine mode turned on the air con and the radio about a half hour my battery died
I thought when you turn the car fully on the engine kicks in when battery power is low ?

It should do that. Are you sure you did? I've left my Prius on READY just as you have and it has worked fine for me.
Are you saying that the 12V aux battery was the one that died?

How did you know if it was about 30 minutes if you were asleep?

It could have have asleep longer I think it was the 12 volt batt. I gave it a jump and it started promptly
I jumped it from the convenient jump terminal under the hood

When my car is in ACC mode, the ventilation fan and A/C indicator light do come on. The actual A/C compressor should not come on, but my quick test moments ago didn't wait for that, it is too cold here to check that anyway.

Make sure the 'READY' light is actually on, and/or test that the car will go really into Drive, even if you move the car only inches as part of the test. Then put it back into Park.

With Acc on the ventilator fan and air condition light do not come on I can do the ready test to see if that splains it

So in what mode does the AC work without the engine cycling on?

None. In ACC mode the fan works via the 12v battery and if the evaporator core is still cold, chilled air will still come out the vents for awhile and the length of time it stays cool will depend on local conditions (heat & humidity).

The OP had a failed start. These are usually caused by rushing the start procedure and letting off the brake too quickly.

Perhaps I misstated, or was unclear.

Foot off brake, if I press the Power button once, it goes into basic ACC mode. The dashboard remains mostly dark, and the climate control is dead.

Foot still off brake, if I press Power again, the car goes into another mode where the whole dashboard lights up, and the climate controls go live. Ventilation fan turns on, A/C indicator light can be turned on. But the ignition won't go Ready, the engine won't fire up, neither battery will charge, and I don't believe the A/C compressor can run. This is also the same condition as the 'failed start' fotomoto mentions, when the foot brake is not applied properly during starting.
