Why is the word "coed" still in use?

I realize that it wasn't that long ago that women didn't attend colleges, or that if they did, they went to women-only schools. And therefore, when the vast majority of colleges that were male only became "coeducational" institutions, the term "coed" was coined to refer to the female students.

However, women have been attending colleges in large numbers for decades now. In fact, I believe the ratio of women to men in college these days is actually a couple of percent higher.

So why is the word "coed" still used to refer to female students, as if they were some sort of strange or unique occurance?

An example of it's common usage can be found in today's headlines, such as "South Carolina Coed Strangled With Bikini"

    Coed

    A. n.

    1. Co-education; a co-educational institution or system.

    1886 L. M. ALCOTT Jo's Boys v. 104 Girls..ought not to study so much. Never liked co-ed. 1958 Listener 12 June 991/3 We are at a Secondary Modern ‘co-ed’.
    2. A girl or woman student at a co-educational institution.

1893 in Funk's Stand. Dict. 1903 Independent 12 Feb. 369/2 Any college where the girls are commonly called ‘co-eds’ is not a truly co-educational institution. 1928 Morning Post 20 Oct. 8/3 In some of the ultra-modern American Universities, where ‘co-eds’ abound. 1931 J. B. PRIESTLEY Angel Pavem. vi. 315 A college girl, what they call over there a co-ed. 1951 AUDEN Nones (1952) 60 Enormous novels by co-eds Rain down on our defenceless heads. 1970 Daily Tel. 6 May 34/3 Undergraduates and co-eds sought more violent or dramatic ways of expressing their feelings.
    B. adj.

    1. Co-educational.

    2. Of or pertaining to a co-ed (sense 2).

1889 Pueblo (Colorado) Opinion 21 July 2/2 A Newport Story, a ‘Co-Ed.’ Story..are some of the attractions of Demorest Monthly Magazine for August. 1895 Bachelor Arts Monthly May 113 There is even danger that soon ‘co-ed’ institutions will degenerate into mere matrimonial agencies. 1949 R. GRAVES 7 Days New Crete vi. 71, I went to a co-ed school in Switzerland. I was the head girl.

No mystery here. It is just an anachronism, like the royal family or the electoral college.

Absolutely nothing. Which is why it's not in a Prius forum. Instead, it is in the "Fred's House of Pancakes" forum. Now granted, Fred's House of Pancakes is hosted on PriusChat, but it is not intended to be Prius related.

That term is so old and out of date. The only place I ever hear or see it used is on TV news and in newspapers. Everytime I hear it I wonder if I'll soon see Archie, Veronica, and Jughead passing by.

    Oh common. Lighten-up Marlin.

Don't try to avoid powerfuel's tough question on some technicality. I have found it best to stand one's ground and confront the tough questions head-on . . . even if you won't necessarily like the answer.

    Here, I'll show you how it's done . . .

    ---------
What does this thread have to do with a Prius?

    Simple. coeds drive Prii too.
In fact, the Prius is well know for being a chick magnet! :)

Now, whether coeds driving Prii is a good thing or not should be the topic of another thread. I wouldn't want to hijack this thread and turn it into some are-coed-chicks-even-smart-enough-to-drive-a-Prius thing. <_<
    ---------

    See. :D
Now isn't that much better?

    [of course, j/k ;) ]

Hmmmm.... Ok, I think I understand. Of course the moment is lost for this thread, so I'll give it a shot next time. I'll just have to think of how I can provoke another such question so I can give it a try.

Good point. I believe "co-ed" good almost be considered a pornographic term nowadays. Hence its popularity.

Actually, all students these days are referred to as "FTEs" (full time equivilents).

That may hold true if the guy were gay!

I visited a niece at San Diego State a year or so ago. The women there way outnumber the guys. The women are also universally so good looking that I asked my niece if it was a requirement that an 8x10 glossy be stapled to the application letter. I have been around a lot of good looking women in my llfe, with lifeguarding, etc. but San Diego State is the tops for shear density of babeatude.  :D

She said that even the plain looking guys get hot girls at SDSU.
It is the rare plain looking “coed†who is the frustrated one at SDSU. :(

Good point. Things have certainly changed since the 70's. Great for guys, not so great for "co-eds".

When I was in college, I never once heard a female student referred to as a "coed." You guys must all be much older than I am!

Inappropriate use of coed continues to be perpetuated by the new media.

This is inspite of the UPI style manuals, and the Handbook of Nonsexist Grammar (1978). This is pure laziness, sexism, disrespect and shows a complete lack of critical thinking.

There are no "coeds" on any campus anywhere. There are students. The term "coed" is an abbreviation of "coeducational", meaning equal access for female and male students. The only thing that comes to mind that is not coeducational is the College of Cardinals and priesthood of the Roman Catholic church.

Time is overdue to dump disrespectful and archaic language.

While I've heard the term 'co-ed' referring to girls (my grandfather still calls FSU the 'girls school') it's not very common. Usually when I hear someone say co-ed, they are referring to co-ed rooming, or co-ed physical education classes. Poor Mr. Austing was horrified to realize our geology camp had set up co-ed housing at his ski lodge last summer =P

Nor does coed refer just to college.

I agree, this is the only way I use co-ed...as in..."I'm not payin' for a coed dorm for my daughter"!!!!!
