Why oh why can't you turn on AC with the FOB until 3.5 minutes have elapsed since you get out?

I don't understand why I can't turn on the AC after I got out of the car. When it's really hot outside and I need to do a quick stop, I would like to keep the AC on until I get back, but nope, for some reason, Toyota deemed necessary to add a 3.5 minutes of down time before the AC can be turned on from the FOB. Anyone knows the real reason why and better yet, how can this be turned off??? That's one thing I like taking my Model 3, I can keep the AC on as I get out and come back to a cool car later on

How about leaving car in Park, powered on (READY) with HVAC on and lock it with the mechanical key stored in the fob?

That's the hack going back to the gen2 at least.

As for the current delay, my guess it is to prevent accidental activation when getting out and leaving the car.

I agree. Can't know for certain but it sure seems like they designed it specifically to do a distinct shutdown/walkaway feature and the specific pre-cool feature without any consideration for a retained cooling feature, in the manner that retained accessory power has come to work in many modern cars.

If you leave the car running the AC keeps going... If you turn the car off the AC turns off. Am I missing something here? Are you saying you want the AC to work when the car is turned off?

AC units often have a turn on delay after turning off. Starting the compressor with an existing pressure in the system causes a lot of stress on the compressor and it requires a higher starting torque, A turn on delay allows the coolant differential pressure to dissipate,

If you want it to stay ON, then don't turn it OFF.

Can't you lock it while running with the FOB ??

Then.......can you really not STAND a minute or two of being
    slightly uncomfortable ? REALLY ???

Yes, while I go to a store, when I'm back, I want the car to be cool and not an oven. The button to turn on AC seemed like a good idea but the delay to turn on makes it unpractical for that purpose. Others have already pointed out to keep the car on with AC running and lock the doors with the manual keys. It's an option, not the best but better than a hot car.

Would make sense, although my Model 3 isn't having that restriction though.

Yeah, really. It's already super hot outside so why get into a hotter interior when you can instead get into a cool one? Is that so hard to understand?

Oh it's very likely up against the same physical restrictions. The software is better attuned to manage the HVAC the way you want, that's all.

It's a bummer the Toyota isn't as smart.

Or Tesla doesn't care about the extra strain put on the air conditioner or heat pump.

If the reason is to prevent early failure, then why doesn't it restrict it while pressing the AC button on the dash?

Yes. In the overall list of things to worry about, that would be near the bottom.
It just is NOT that important.
And you are in Canada, after all. Try living in Florida.

Well, you're more used to it than we are so 33C for us is really hot and the car gets hotter inside than that pretty fast. Why tolerate it when you can have the option not to?

Indeed, we're not as accustomed to high heat than you but the same could be said for -30C

    BECAUSE........
Leaving the AC and the vehicle running while you are not in the drivers seat,
leaves you open to several potentially disastrous problems.
Which, in my opinion, is NOT worth the risk to gain something
    so trivial.

Your car, your risk, but I absolutely agree with the design that
makes that somewhat difficult to do.

Note: If you are really THAT concerned about the heat............
The evidence is becoming OVERWHELMING that global warming is real
and dangerous. Even the far right Fascists don't seem to be disagreeing with
    that much lately.
What have YOU done lately to promote actually doing something to fix
    or minimize the problem ?
Driving a hybrid is not enough.

What disastrous problem are you talking about? Tesla have been doing that for years.

As for my impact on the climate, beside driving an hybrid, I also drive the most efficient EV (Model 3 SR+) as well as going to work by bike (21 km each way) from late March (once snowbanks are mostly gone) to early December (until the snow stays on the ground).

We limit garbage by recycling and composting.

I don't have an AC and use electricity to heat our home. Electricity here is mostly by hydro, so no coal or gas power plant. I have home automation that adjust the heating by who's present at home.

Our windows have Low Emission Argon to reduce heat lost and I have a mature leafs tree facing South to prevent heat from hitting our home in summer but letting the sun through in winter.

My lawn mower (Cub Cadet XR2 1000) is battery operated so no emission is produced there either. Waiting for my snowblower to stop working so I can buy an electric one.

So, I think that from a first world country, I'm doing my part. What about you?

Really ? You can't figure out what bad things might happen if your car is RUNNING but nobody is in the drivers seat ??

Punch the window, open the door from inside and drive it away.

Something goes wrong mechanically and you are not there to respond to the
terrible noise that happens.......so it keeps running and catches fire.

For whatever reason, it is not QUITE in Park.
Car rolls away with no driver.

In many places, it is ILLEGAL to leave a vehicle running with no driver.

As far as helping with the environment, do you support government efforts to slow down global warning ?
Or dispute those who still claim it is not real ??

    I"m done this is pointless.

You're aware that the car AC behaves just like a heat pump at home, right? Are you afraid of a catastrophic failure from those? When's the last time you heard about a car that spontaneously started driving by itself? Of all the things to be concerned with, that's probably one of the last one.

Yes, I'm all for the carbon tax that our government have implemented. Those with big @ss truck need to account for their choice of vehicles.

    You have been brainwashed.
The carbon tax ALONE does nothing to reduce emissions, as long as the offenders just pay up.
And especially if the tax income generated is used for some other purpose.
