I own a 2007 Prius. Love the car. Plan to buy winter tires. Usually buy full winter tire package from tirerack.com. However, tirerack says that I should purchase their tpms (tire pressure monitor system) with the new set of tires and wheels. This adds almost another 500 bucks to the price, for a total of about 1000 bucks for a complete set of winter Blizzaks (on sale) with wheels. This is crazy. Can the new sets be used safely without the the tpms? Any advice?

sure, that's what I do. you just have an idiot light on for those months. (another alternative is to have the sensors moved between wheels, but that would negate the point of having a premounted set that you can swap on/off.)
