Found the problem, I think, and also want to now go squirrel hunting? Why would they do this, assuming they did, as how else would this wire just "disappear" and also the insulation look a bit chewed?

Is this the camshaft sensor? I followed the air intake from the filter and was trying to locate the camshaft sensor and this is what I found, right hand side of engine, not on top but toward the top.

Does she have to get this repaired by Toyota to keep the drivetrain warranty? Or is this something that can be done by any good mechanic shop? Or does it have to go to a hybrid specialist even though it's the ICE enging?

you can have anyone repair it, no warranty implications

Have another question, not sure if I should start a new thread. So TOYOTA dealer (OMG!!) says they don't have this pigtail part, can only order the harness which was just shy of $2K. What the hell?

So was going to look for salvage part, but can't find a Prius C. What other TOYOTA ICE engine might be compatible? Would a YARIS likely be the same engineering/compatible? I fear the squirrel chewed it too close to the terminal nuts and so it can't be soldered would need a pigtail.

Which brings me to a new question? Can you even solder near a traction motor/wiring?

Thanks for helping out this single mom of limited financial means to help her daughter.

What you would ordinarily get from Toyota would be two 'repair terminals', after looking them up in the wiring diagram (more info). You can look at this old post for an example of what you find there.

(Caution: it's just an example, it's a different connector than the one you're looking for; there will be a similar display for yours, which will have the right part numbers.)

    Would look kinda like this:

You can see the picture will show you how to release the two chewed-off terminals from your existing connector, by lifting the lock and the lance holding each terminal in place. The repair terminals will come preattached to short lengths of wire (the colors won't usually match the original, can't have everything), and the display will also show what crimp sleeves to buy.

Toyota uses parallel crimps (you put the stripped wire ends into the sleeve so they overlap, then crimp it down), which for some reason you are nearly guaranteed not to find at a generic auto parts store; they'll want to sell you butt splices instead. If you get the sleeves from Toyota they'll be the right ones.

For an exterior application like this one, Toyota will use (I believe) a sleeve with a heat-shrinkable insulating cover that contains its own sealant. If that's not what's shown, then the alternative is essentially Rescue Tape—the weird stretchy silicone stuff that bonds to itself and makes a sealed blob after you've wrapped it (up and down around the sleeve after completing the crimp).

Toyota would not solder that connector; engines vibrate, and they chose finely-stranded wire to make it flexible enough to withstand the vibrations and not break off. Solder wicks up those fine strands and turns the flexible wire into a brittle stick.

I'm a little puzzled at what the dealer told you they didn't have. Do they actually not have those repair terminals? (The part number would 82998-something). I'd be surprised. Maybe you spoke with someone who misunderstood something.

Thank you ChapmanF. Probably trying to take advantage of a woman, idk.

I will go to another dealer in person with the part and hope I get a better result! If I get the right parts, this sounds easy to repair, easier than the ceiling fan I installed on a vaulted ceiling, lol.

Thanks for letting me know about their crimps too, as I had another wire screw device in mind. Without seeing the crimps, anything special to know about how to load/where to cut the insulation on the wires?

She's running again!!!! Need to put some protective electrical wiring.... Warning light is still on but she's running normally. Do I need to re-set the message/light code by dis-connecting negative to 12 volt? Or do I have an additional problem? (Only one error code prior to fix, which was this problem, camshift position sensor.)

Looks tidy. Do you have some Rescue Tape to go over those splices? They won't last in the underhood environment unsealed like that.

Sounds like a roll of Honda's Rodent Tape wouldn't be out of place, either.
