Did you already pay sales tax when you bought the car (in another state?)

Yes. looked at the carbon copy and it says that the reg fees were $200. So is that $200 every year now?

    Thanks,

Using your numbers if this were a NJ transaction: The state charges a registration fee of $15. The dealer asked for and received $200. The dealer pays the state $15 and keeps the other $185 as profit. There also would have been a doc fee for their clerk to type the info into the DMV system.

When signing the contract notice this higher bogus amount is ALWAYS printed on the form as if it is required. When pointing it out to the Finance Guy he'll backtrack saying it is an estimate and any overage will be refunded. I just cross it out & write in the correct amount. never an argument.

Maybe you can return to the dealer and negotiate a refund or get some value back but unless there is a clause in the contract stating otherwise they aren't obligated to return anything.

The state and local sales tax total is $980. If the dealer collected taxes they would be itemized and the dealer will pay the $980 to the governments. If the dealer did not collect the sales tax you'll have to pay the DMV.

The sales taxes are one time payments. The $15 registration is an annual fee.
