I disagree. Instant communication would have (IMHO) outpaced the virus so that it's impact might look alot like the Coronavirus. 100 years ago, very few locations around the world would have had wireless telephony to relay the severity of the threat. .

At that time, wired telegraphy had already been girdling the globe for decades. News of The Great War was being passed back very quickly, much faster than the transport ships.

At least, news that the widespread war censorship permitted.

"very few locations"@289. Better to say none. This surely interfered with 1918 disease responses but many other things interfered more.

Maybe the thesis advanced @289 is that 1918 is much like 2020 but in a different world? I disagree. 1918 was a tiger. This is a misbehaving dog.

I am watching COVID-19 in Yunnan Province here. Two days ago one person died in Yuxi, where I don't know anyone. Yesterday one died in Xishuangbanna where I know many. It is not a trivial matter for graphical analyses.

Rest of world might not care a lot, but China will be 'different' for several more months.

'rest of the world' does care. they care about it infecting their population because of china's deceipt and stupidity.

think of where we might be if china had been open and honest from the get go

In this instance, one can't really fault them. Hard to know what help to seek, until you know what you are facing.

can't fault the chinese government for threatening doctors reporting an unknown respiratory illness?

can't fault xi-xi for hiding it until he knew he couldn't anymore?

can't fault them for refusing to let who in?

can't fault them for refusing american aid while saying america was offering no aid?

Think of where we would have been if this thing would have started in the US......

Frankly, I'm no big fan of Commie nations with a ruler-for-life boss, but I do credit them for containing it MUCH more effectively than we would have in the land of the free.

If I'm accurately informed, and one has to wonder about that BOTH HERE AND THERE......the ChiComms imposed very rapid and severe travel restrictions on tens of millions of people, and they're using their abilities with facial recognition and people tracking for (some might say) less ignoble purposes during this outbreak.

We can't even use photo enforcement in the US and there are still people in this nation that won't vaccinate their kids.

we don't eat live animals (that i know of)

china imposed travel restrictions after the cat was out of the bag.

meanwhile, they criticized us for imposing travel restrictions

    Oh?

If you mean "live" animals then I take it that you don't eat much seafood.
If you mean 'wild' animals then I take it that you've never visited........say, Louisiana.

Death rate for COVID-19 is likely much lower, but we may never have a good estimate.

Unlike influenza, the vast majority of COVID-19 infections appear to range from asymptomatic to mild disease. Hence symptoms would most often be no more severe than those of a mild "cold". In this situation, almost no one would present to medical attention and thus this very large majority dose not get diagnosed.

To get accurate statistical information, forced random screening of sufficient size would be required.

While great interest was not expressed in pie chart @281, I can now clarify one thing.

The Chinese ncov website 'total cases' is exactly the sum of 'confirmed' + 'recovered' + 'dead'. If that is so on (all) other days, definitions are a bit clearer. I have not checked that.

Categories 'severe' and 'suspected' appear to be subsets of 'confirmed' even though that is confusing for 'suspected'.

Concerning pandemic, one would track disease statistics in countries other than China. Based on WHO sitreps (now numbering 32), or some other source.

Symptoms@305. COVID-19 cough is allegedly dry as opposed to 'productive' (that is to say with mucus). An aggressive response would include blood or nasal swab testing, and some form of lung visualization. Is your health-care provider in the loop yet?

zhao jianping, head corona expert in hubei said that some patients who were discharged from the hospital after testing negative, later tested positive, and could infect others.

no, we're in florida. if it is worse tomorrow, we're off to a walk in clinic.

Your concerns are realistic. I am exceedingly glad to be far from Wuhan.

Just now to 'mask on' for shopping. Kunming is much less frisky, but still...

Rapidly @311. sitrep 32 indicates Republic of Korea leads in new cases. Time for some Seoul searching.
