I had a lengthy conversation with a Yakima customer service rep yesterday and here is what I found out.

Yakima will develop a "fit" for a Prius if enough people request it.
Call 888-925-0703x2x1x1 and state "I see you don't have a fit for a 2004 Prius and I'm concerned, would you log a no fit in your database".

Once they have enough requests they will develop a roof jam Q Clip just for the Prius.

Alternatives are a "Q Tower" with rails or pads mounted on roof that require dropping the headliner to determine most support points to attach bolts (no warranty by Yakima, possibly a dealer would warrant but I doubt it).

A second alternative is a "custom" fit where the dealer comes up with his/her best guess as to what will work.

I'd prefer a "fit" developed by Yakima; it only takes a few seconds to log a request so I encourage all of you to make a quick call to them.

I'll do the same with Thule and post separately as there may be those interested in one company over the other.

from the Yahoo group (march 9 or so):

Craig basically repeats this information Mar 24. (tho he says "this month" instead of "mid March"
Somone else claims the part # is 2142.

Via email I received the following information from Thule customer support yesterday concerning the availability of roof rack fittings for the 2004 Prius:

"The fit for the Prius is the 400XT Aero Foot Pack, a Fit Kit 2142 and a pair of 50" Load Bars. We anticipate the new kit arriving in the U.S. in May."

At REI, I was able to look at the current fit guides for Yakima and Thule. Thule lists the Fit Kit 2142 (no availability indicated) while Yakima lists nothing. The Thule guide also gives the bar spread as 24".

Note: For over 20 years, I had Yakima racks on my previous car.

Was that rei.com, or at a store? (Cause I just tried rei.com)

I've been on Thule's e-mail list since November, maybe they are waiting until May to notify me.

The fit list was at a retail REI store (Concord, CA).
