Last I heard, it wouldn't be brought to the U.S., has that changed?

The size difference between the Yaris & the Prius ought to mean that it's EPA mpg's will be no less then 10% greater than the Prius mpg rating . . . ie 55mpg. If the Yaris can't get better than 55mpg than something's wrong. Also . . . I have a strong hunch that the LED DRL's will soon become as passé as 1975 orange one-piece bell bottom snow ski suits, and 24" wagon wheel rims. They're just too "look at me" - over the top.

    Two questions.

    1) where did the rumor of the 1.33 yaris engine powering the hsd come from? Is there a program. I would really rather have toyota add DI to the ICE if they are adding resources, but am curious why they would not use the prius engine, or the gen II prius engine.

    2) What is the difference between the prius c and the yaris hsd? Will the prius c be higher content higher mileage and the yaris hsd be lower cost? Will they both be sold in some markets?

If the yaris's purpose is to the cheapest hybrid I'm not sure if 55mpg is even a goal. I would not use that as a measure only price. But that is guestimating that the prius-c's purpose is to be the fuel economy king. I could be missing something hence the questions above.

LED DRLs look cool and are here because the technology makes them possible at an affordable price. Fashion may change, and this will change the look, but I would expect LEDs to remain in cars and the price fall further.

I am unfamiliar with orange bell bottom ski suits. Do you have jpg? Do the bell bottoms help you ski? Were they meant to be ironic like much of the db hipster stuff today?

The more the better! I would buy any hybrid that gets better mpg than any other hybrid on the road. I love the Yaris too - small, light, nimble, and efficient.

VERY good point! Also, with the Prius being Toyota's flagship hybrid, Toyota might be reluctant to allow the Yaris to surpass the Prius in mpg.
...getting back to price.. getting 55mpg might not necessarily increase Toyota's cost. If they apply the pre-existing 51mpg Prius HSD technology to the Yaris, they might be able to get 55mpg without having to add to the Yaris hybrid price.

I doubt the toyota will allow the yaris to get better mileage than the prius c, I don't think they would stop it from beating our gen III prius.

I really have no idea what the mpg will be. We do not know what the engine is or the weight. I would definitely not judge the car poorly if it got 46 mpg but was significantly less expensive than the prius. That is all I was saying.

The European Auris HSD beats the Prius on fuel economy! OK, it's only by 1mpg on the Euro test cycle but it's still more economical. There is talk from my dealers that the Yaris HSD will be much more economical than either the Prius or Auris. Guess it'll be down to the smaller engine and presumably a smaller battery etc.

Either way, there's not long to wait!

the prius c would to me be the next new prius if looking at MPG.
if not then i think thats a bad thing.
if the yaris HSD would put down the same number in MPG then the prius c then there is something wrong with the design of the prius c.
the prius needs to be the next standard in high MPG

You make a great point that I had not considered. Since the U.S. will be getting the Prius c, we likely will not be getting the Yaris hybrid. Even if the Yaris hybrid gets better mpg, Toyota will say "Americans get the Prius c and Europeans get the Yaris hybrid."

They sure are keeping hybrids a secret these days--saw the latest Car & Driver and Motor Trend mags at the dentist today. Nothing on hybrids in the '11 car previews.

Gas is $3.15 /gallon here and the clock is ticking. Never a better time to buy a hybrid.

Very nice! I hope it gets 60 cordless MPG and cost a fraction of Ampera (Volt).

It looks very much like Prius c Concept.

Exciting. I might have to let me kids learn to drive so that I can dump my Prius on one of them.
About the looks -- that is one angry looking front fascia. The car appears ready to bite ;)
