I just can't believe this is possible but a Minivan in China has been pulled over and found to contain 66 children! Yes you read that right, 66 young kids packed into an 8 seater minivan.

Watch this in horror! (though the kids don't seem to mind)

Over a decade ago, an acquaintance returning from China described how a Chinese road building crew was using a newly acquired backhoe to improved road building efficiency. The sent the backhoe to the city center, all the workers grabbed whatever they could hold and got hauled to the work site.....then off went the backhoe to get the next batch of workers. Be glad this was a van. I have no idea how many kids fit on a backhoe.

at least they made benches. Before that part of the video, I thought they were all standing. Yeesh. Thank god they were found by the police before anything bad happened.

And people wonder why mass transit is not working so well in the U.S.
We need more backhoes and vans....

Not to different to our trains and buses in the UK a ticket does not guaranty you a seat, but it does in Grumpy's taxi.

If school funding doesn't improve, we may have to consider this for busing.

Those pictures remind me of the Chinese name for those vans

Those vans are called "mian bao che" in mainland China. Translates roughly to "loaf of bread van". They got the name because they are shaped like a loaf of bread. Earlier one were even more loaf of bread shaped.

Those kids were stacked in like slices of bread in a bread package.:D

Good point. Why is it unacceptable to squeeze kids into a van yet perfectly ok to squeeze adults in a tube/subway train or bus!

Anyway, you don't want to travel by public transport as that's how you catch nits! Get a cab and go door to door ;)

Those Chinese loaf of bread vans have about the same structural integrety as a loaf of bread. Subways, trains and busses are not only far less likely to be involveed in an accident, on average they don't get wadded up when they are in a collision, they usually wad up whatever they hit.

At the rate fares are going up on the trains it will soon be cheaper, and they want to build a new line that will take 20minuets off Birmingham to London that Joe Blogs will never be able to afford a ticket.

While it looks like a serious event for BBC and PriusChat, was the Chinese enforcement action for being over the limit of 65 kids per van?

I think it already is! I wanted a run to London and back the other day and was quoted £373 return by train! ha ha ha they weren't kidding. If I'd got a cab it would have been £270 but being a tight Yorkshire man I decided to drive at a cost of £50 in petrol. A no brainer, but then again I had the London traffic around Kensington and Chelsea to cope with! I will NEVER complain about the traffic in my town again! Never!

And the look of the faces of those kids for all the attention; we've been doing this for a long time, what all this fuss is about?

My daughter is transported to/from school in a vehicle that seats 66 students. However, it gets a lot worse mileage than the Chinese version. Funny thing is my daughter's bus is never full and she complains if she has to share a seat that the bus is too crowded.[IMG]

School buses in America don't have seat belts except for a couple extra doors I don't think they have any passenger safety devices. Besides in China that's not a van it's the American equivalent of the "short bus" in silver instead of yellow!

In the last decade education funding has risen over 50%, maybe we need to get a handle on spending and costs first?
