I found a link where Pb of ToyotaNation wrote up a fairly detailed thread on how to detail your vehicle and I thought I'd share it with you folks.

The author does very well in covering many aspects of the process. I don't agree with every detail (pun) but in general there is some great information there!

Great articles, TP! I printed them out....I know I won't do much of it, BUT I will get better drying towels, and dump the dishwashing soap in favor of something more Prius-friendly....

heh np but Pb should take the credit for writing it up (and I think he collaborated with someone else).

That write up made me more comfortable in claybarring the car. I eventually did buy a claybar kit and claybar'd my dad's Camry. Phew did that ever make a difference! It's silver but you can definitely see (and feel) the difference compared to just simply waxing after a wash.

Those were actually pretty well done. The two-bucket wash method was not mentioned, but other than that it seemed like a decent introduction. For more in-depth information you can go to a dedicated site like detailcity.org.

What does 'detail' mean in this context? Cleaning & maintenance? Is this another American usage to confuse foreigners?

In the military service here an NCO 'details' someone to do a particular job. Example:

Sergeant: "Corporal, go and detail ten men to wash the CO's car!"

Maybe it's now:

Sergeant: "Detail ten men to detail the CO's car."

Corporal: "Exterior detail or internal detail, sir?"

Sergeant: "Don't ask detailed questions about the detail. Just get on with it."


No - I haven't got anything better to do and it's rather late in the evening.

I believe they use the word 'detail' to infer cleaning and getting into all the nooks and crannies. In other words, carefully and meticulously clean the car.

In this context, detail is used to mean an extremely thorough cleaning of the car, either inside or out. It's essentially the difference between moping a tiled floor and getting down on your hands and knees with a toothbrush to really get all that grit and grime out of the grout.
