2006 models (the year the the high resolution screen began) have a 5th Generation Nav system. As far as I know, I believe this applies to the 07s and 08s as well.

???

Thanks.
Bump for an answer to this question. I have a 2004 (same as 2005), Nav v7.1, and want to buy the Ultimate Lockpick from Coastal but it seems like I won't be able to do address entry with 7.1 and the lockpick?

I picked up a NAV upgrade for my 2006 Prius from my local dealer today. It is labeled CY '07 Navigation Upgrade Gen 4" I told the parts guy that I thought the 06 Nav should be Gen5, but he looked it up on his computer, and it looked like he was right. If it is Gen5, where is it documented? He claimed he checked with the place he got it from, and they told him I needed Gen4.
Thanks for any help.

Your dealer is DEAD WRONG

'06 Prius has a Gen. 5 navigation system. Ver. 07.1 Disk for your car is part # 86271-53022. That number is on the disk. If you disk doesn't have that number it's the wrong one. The disk itself doesn't indicate the Generation number, just the part number. but maybe your packaging did.

Gen5 v.07.1 is part # 86271-53022. (06-08 Prius)Your car

Gen4 v.07.1 is part # 86271-33047. (04-05 Prius)That's not your car

Gen(2)3 v.07.1 is part # 86807-12016. (01-03 Prius)

Tell your dealer to reference Toyota PANT Bulletin 07-37 dated Nov. 1, 2007 ; second and third page, and aspire to do better at his job!

I just got a new Gen5 v.07.1 disk 86271-53022 off Ebay for $99.00! There are a couple others there, but you really need to know what your're looking for.

Thanks 9G-Man. I called the dealership this morning and gave them the information. Their response was that information from the internet was unreliable. I was quite insistent and asked them read the Bulletin mentioned above. They called back this afternoon, and agreed that I/you/PriusChat was correct. They will call when the Gen5 DVD comes in.

I have a 2004 Prius and have never been happy with the Nav system especially because it can't be taught better routes and it can't be programmed while moving. I also would love to have a 3-D view. Are any of these features on upgraded versions? Can I use a DVD-ROM put out by a different company that will not present compatibility issues?

No and no. The only way to significantly upgrade the navigation is by buying a stand-alone unit.

I realize this is slightly off-subject, but allow me to once again state my extreme disappointment in the nav system. Our standalone Garmin Nuvii 350 is excellent, my bells-and-whistley Toyota system is laughably unreliable.
Is it possible that future disk upgrades might help?

Hi guys,

I am not here to argue if the NAV worth the $$ or disable while in motion, but I personally think this is a safety feature that i can live with. I have try to operate the NAV system on my other car while in motion (use the code i found here), and i can tell u it is very dangerous. I almost hit a biker passing me from behind on the highway. Long story. Second, I let my passenger do the search and can't resist to keep watching what they do. It is just too much distraction.

Regards someone having trouble using the NAV, you can try my trick below. I m in north california, and also travel a lot to see client at different house or city, so far I am able to find all of them. 1 out of 300 addresses I go, was not able to find it in the NAV. But I managed to find a close enough address and know on his door. Even mapquest map point me to a total different route and direction.

1, if u are having trouble finding an address, you can try first input the street name. I believed the system will automatically show you the street name and city name. Select the correct one and then it will prompt u to input the house number. 99.99% you will see the destination house number will fall between the range your NAV software showing. Punch the house number and the NAV is ready to use. So what's the 0.01% you might ask, well, there is time the destination house number is not showing. Then you might either pick one number closes to your destination or check the street name again, u can try to input North, south, east, west what ever you can think of to show the hidden street.

2, Navtaq provides the map data as well as responsible to correct whatever bugs they have. They provide the databased based on the licensee's contract and the nature of the usage environment, Portable or Vehicle used. Thus, the result or features such as POI will be greatly deffer between your portable and your NAV system. Try to contact them and let them know the data is not correct.

good luck.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "laughably unreliable".

The merits of Toyota NAV vs. aftermarket have been debated many times over in other threads, so I won't rehash it all here.

If your comment is related to addresses or streets not being found, then yes, future map updates will improve the performance.

If your comment is related to features aftermarket units have that the Toyota does not, then you are probably out of luck there.

As kermityfrog suggested, you can enter an address in various orders (street name, house number, city) which can help pinpoint when a particular housenumber may not be in the database. Likewise for searching POI by name, if you enter the city name it will greatly narrow the search results.

Just take it for what it is, learn the voice commands (especially "Address" and "Nearest" <any POI category>) and familiarize yourself with the Freeway Guidance view for travelling, and it is actually quite effective.

Many of the complaints people make about the system being "unfriendly" are founded in knowledge of other systems, and of course you will always like the one you know best.
