I was wondering, have any of you out there changed the brake pads on the Prius yourself?

If so was there any additional difficulty due to the regenerative aspects of the brakes?

I have not done it or had it done. I just got to 30k and the mechanic was amazed at how little ware there was. The friction brake pads are just that you do not need to mess with the regenerative part of it at all.

oh we will change them ourselves... in about 10 years.

the "additional difficulty" from the regen brakes is trying to wear the brake pads down enough to need to change them!

The regenerative aspects all happen before it gets to the pads. The pads are only used at under about 9 MPH or in a panic situation. They are standard pads and easy to change. I plan to begin looking into new pads at around 100,000 miles.

The procedure is the same as any car with front disc brakes. I have only replaced a few sets and they were on the 1st Gen models( have yet to see any probs with the 2nd Gens). Suprisingly it is around 70-80k that they needed replaced. Not because they were worn but because the pad had dislocated from the metal backing plate. Thickness was still about 7-8mm. Must have used some poor glue on those, .

One Toyota salesman I talked to claimed the brakes would go for 200k miles, since they see so little wear.

My 2005 has 103K, and Dealer said all is OK. Which I take to mean more than 50% left.

My 2004 Prius brakes are at 158,000 and counting. 200k life is a reasonable estimate.

If you DIY the pads, just be careful not to open the hydraulic lines since you need a special computer tool to bleed the brakes properly.

I've heard and read on this site 2 different things. One says you have to wait 2 minutes from power down to compress a caliper because you have to wait for the ecu to power down. The other referred to the braking power backup taking 5 mins from shutdown to discharge...
