Friends: 0 | Does anyone know if you can program a Smart Key at home, or does it have to be done by Toyota service? If so, is it very hard? Toyota wants $50 just to program... so I would like to do it myself if possible. Muchas Gracias! |

Friends: 0 | I found this on another forum: http://www.vfaq.net/docs/smartkey_programming.htm I bought a FOB off eBay and can't get it to work though. I think it's the FOB. The Prius keeps telling me it doesn't like it. I'll keep looking and get back out to do more of the Prius Chicken Dance tomorrow. Close door 2x, stand on one foot... Oh also silver/chrome emblem on back = old-school remote only, chrome/silver emblem = SmartKey. Any SmartKey is a "master". I'm not sure about the black keys. Anyways bottom line is you don't have to worry about the "stub" issues they had with old Prius on the 2nd generation 04-07. In case anyone is interested programming those is here: http://www.coastaletech.com/transmitters.htm Hey if you have multiple Prius this is also interesting: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Prius_...f/message/18548 $50 for getting your key to play nice with you car is a total jacking. FU sleezy dealership man! Hey let me know if this works for you. Another data point couldn't hurt. Cheers j |

Friends: 0 | I just got back from the dealer who wanted to charge $210 for the key and $125 to program. Toyota doesn't seem to have any reign over their dealerships and allows them to charge whatever they like. Completely ridiculous. This is the second time I've walked out of this dealership angry. City Toyota in Daly City, CA just lost all my business for maintenance and my next new car because they wanted to over-charge me about $75 or so. I hope it was worth it for them. |

Friends: 3 | Art's Automotive in Berkeley charged me less than $50 to add two keyfobs. You might give them a call and ask their price for a keyfob. Best deal would be to buy one online from a discount dealer, and take it to Art's. |

Friends: 1 | Has anybody been successful using the above program to reprogram a used key from another vehicle. I need another smart key and plan to buy one from ebay and try to program it myself. If you have tried let me know if it worked. I have just bought a 2008 Prius and only got one key with it. Thanks Roy Last edited by rapidroy; 08-18-2009 at 03:45 PM. |

So at the very leaswt, call around to see what the programming costs may be as they seem to vary quite a bit. Also, just as important, is the difference between new and used smart keys. There seems to be a limit how many times, a smart key can be used before, it can no longer be added to a different Prius. The non smart key fobs seem to have mixed results with this...I was able to get a used key fob(way beyond the 128 times that smart keys seem to be limited too) on my Prius with both starting and unlocking the doors. Friends: 0 | Steve, So when you say you were able to unlock doors manually, do you mean with the buttons on the key? I've been searching around these forums for a while now (I lost a key about a month ago) and haven't found a single person that was able to get a smart key (one with a silver Toyota emblem) to do anything besides start the car.
