Good Question! I do not know the official maximum speed but I have hit 77 mph on I95. However, that was early on. Now, due in large part to the feedback provided by the fuel consumption screen, I have become a kinder, gentler and slower driver. That is perhaps the most powerful fuel-conserving feature of my 2K4 Prius. Witness that my average tank mpg has steadily risen with each fillup from 41 mpg with my first to 52.6 mpg with my most recent.

Oops! That was beginning to sound like a sermon. Sorry.

In Europe, the Prius is limited to 170Kmh which is about 106MPH. During the test drive I went to 150Kmh about 95Mph without noticing it.

US Prius are limited to the same - and this is for powertrain reasons. At this speed, MG1 and/or the ICE are at their maximum speeds. If anyone here has a copy of Wayne Brown's Prius HSD simulator, it would show which is at maximum speed at which MPH.

With or without the optional JATO unit attached to the back?

This may be correct, however there is another possible reason for the 106 mph speed limit - tire ratings. 106 matches the speed rated certification for the tires used.

On a recent trip I wanted to see if the digital readout on the speedo went to three digits so I got my '04 up to 103mph, driving with one hand while taking pictures of the display with the other. Pictures did not come out, but I can verify we have a three place digital readout!

All you have to do is flip to km/h to see if 3 digits can be displayed.

Speaking of pressing the display button, it was rather fun to be able to legally drive at 100 in Canada, 100kph that is.

the 2k1 Prius will do 152K for sure. Lucky no radar traps on that road that day.
