I got a ticket for my front window tint yesterday by a CHP officer in Lincoln, CA.

Only about 4" of my passenger side window was even showing but it was enough to get me pulled over. Apparently I was missinformed about the actual law. There is absolutely no aftermarket tint allowed on front windows period. I called my buddy who is CHP in LA and he confirmed that the officer was correct.

I was given a fix-it ticket and a few months to get it corrected but according to both sources the officer has the discression to chose to make it a violation even on the first offence but generally upon your 3rd ticket for the front window tint you will then be charged with a real violation. IE don't cop an attitude or you may get the violation on your first stop. lol

I see it everywhere and can't really understand how peeps get away with it.

Uh, that's not right. Allow me to prove:

Quote:
(d) Notwithstanding subdivision (a), clear, colorless, and transparent
material may be installed, affixed, or applied to the front side windows,
located to the immediate left and right of the front seat if the following
conditions are met:

(1) The material has a minimum visible light transmittance of 88 percent.

(2) The window glazing with the material applied meets all requirements
of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 205 (49 C.F.R. 571.205),
including the specified minimum light transmittance of 70 percent and
the abrasion resistance of AS-14 glazing, as specified in that federal
standard.

(3) The material is designed and manufactured to enhance the ability
of the existing window glass to block the sun's harmful ultraviolet A rays.

(4) The driver has in his or her possession, or within the vehicle,
a certificate signed by the installing company certifying that the
windows with the material installed meet the requirements of this
subdivision and identifies the installing company and the material's
manufacturer by full name and street address, or, if the material was
installed by the vehicle owner, a certificate signed by the material's
manufacturer certifying that the windows with the material installed
according to manufacturer's instructions meets the requirements of this
subdivision and identifies the material's manufacturer by full name
and street address.

That's correct... you can have 'tint', but it's so light it doesn't make a visual difference, except to maybe block some UV rays. Personally I have my front windows tinted at 50% (rears are 40%). Heck I even have the windshield 'tinted'. It's only 70% I believe and blocks almost ALL of the heat from coming through it. 3M Crystalline, awesome stuff!

I believe factory tinted glass is about 88% VLT, so the tint on your front windows could be at most .70/.88 = 80% VLT to not violate CA vehicle code. Typically, the lightest film offered by most shops is 70%.

I suspect his windows are darker than allowed. Else how would they be noticed from the distance given the small amount showing.

I guess I should have specified that any tint that really is noticible lol. I cannot remember the percentage tint I have on the front windows but it is pretty light. I was told that it was what was legal for front windows.

I'm going to talk to the shop that did mine and see what he says then confirm with my friend who just started with CHP in LA.

So as of right now I was told I have to remove the front tint and then have the ticket signed off.
