removing front door 6x9 speakers

Made some speaker standoffs for the 6x9's had to add a small shim to get the right distance from the back of the speaker to the glass when rolled down, only 1/10th of an inch of clearance. Had to keep it close so I could get the door panel back on without having to take a heat gun to it.



Mounted them utilizing machine screws with the locking nuts with the plastic in their threads so they won't work loose and sealed the standoffs in place with an adhesive caulk (the white stuff).


Speaker in place with extra sound deadening to the door. I removed the factory speaker plug, added some speaker wire to allow me to route the wire through the hole in the top right of the door that the power window cable goes through then down the door and connected to the speaker. When I hookup the amp, will just tie into the junction box in the passenger kickpanel. Additionally the squawkers are wired in separate from that junction, so can disconnect the 6x9, amp them and leave the squawkers playing off the head unit. Door panel went back on with no problems.



Pic of my pioneer head unit connected and powered up. I used a standard Toyota wiring adapter. Hooked up with no problems. I have to go pick up some 8mm x 5mm screws to mount the head unit to the stock brackets, then can reassemble the dash and take it for a spin, provided it all still works.


Still tons of work to do though. Gotta get the drivers side speaker installed, amps wired and installed, and subwoofer box finished.

Thanks for the update! I have a couple of questions:

1. What thickness wood did you use to cut the 6x9 speaker standoffs? (Or what's the overall thickness of the standoff now?)

2. Why did you have to run the speaker wire through the door and into the cabin? What prevented you from just tying the amp into the stock speaker cable inside the cabin?

Oh, do we know what size speakers are in the rears? 6x9s?

I'm looking to do something but I like to keep things simple (and cheap).

Would this work:

Run the stock head unit speaker outputs to a 4 channel amplifier (that has speaker level inputs) and then run to the front and rear speakers. Super simple, super basic. Do you think that would sound nice? Even if I lost the factory "tweeters" I'm sure a nice pair of 6x9s in the front would more than make up for it.

By searching this site I found the back speakers have a diameter of like 6.3 inches, so basically a 5 inch speaker will fit there fine with a nice little baffle thing.

I pulled my doors off this morning to see how the stereo shop put the 6x9s in. They used these plastic baffle things. I guess they had them in stock, or perhaps they came with the rockford fosgate 6x9s. I don't know. Or did they cannibalize the stock 6x9s? Whatever they did it works incredibly well!

A few questions:

1. You mention 6x9 - but from the pictures, they look more like 6" or 9" round - not a traditional 6x9 oval.......

2. Can you measure the actual speaker dimensions, or get a part number etc off it??? This will help to get a good cross reference for other speakers that can be dropped in......

Hi!

The fronts are definitely 6x9 ovals. The part number for the fronts 6x9s are: Rockford Fosgate Punch P1694. I did a quick search and the mount depth is 3".

The rears (not pictured - I need to take the door off and check it out) are 6.5" round are Rockford Fosgate Punch P1653

Darn. Not quite the easy job I hoped after my passenger door's speaker started buzzing a lot last weekend. Not a constant thing yet, but on some stations it's really bad due to their bass range.

It's just going to have to wait for complete failure I guess, then I'll HAVE to get it done.

They canibalized the stock 6x9's. I wasn't sure how well that would work. Looks like it worked fine.

Any idea how they did that? How is the speaker part of the original speaker attached to the plastic bracket? Looks really good RadioPrius1's pics...
