Friends: 0 | Greetings, This issue has plagued my GEN III from the purchase...finally as of April 8th, 2010 Toyota has officially release an updated shim kit. I mentioned this my service tech (who is wonderful) every time I've been in for an oil change...this time he looked to see if anything was posted about the issue since I'm getting close to that magical 36K mark and eureka he found this service bulletin which describes my issue to the 'T'. The kit has been order and will be installed next Saturday so I'll update this post with my experience and the results. Here are the details on the update: -- Service Category: Brake Section: Brake (rear) Market: USA Applicability: 2010 Prius WMI(s): JTD Introduction: Some 2010 Prius vehicles may experience rear brake squeak when backing up or moving forward during the first few brake applications when the brakes are cold. An updated rear brake shim kit is available to reduce the likelihood of this condition occurring. Parts Information: Model Plant Production Change Effective VIN Prius Tsutsumi No.1 Line JTDKN3DU#A0086169 Tsutsumi No.2 Line JTDKN3DU#A1115205 Toyota Auto Body JTDKN3DU#A5090145 Parts Information: Previous Part # Current Part # Part Name QTY 04946-12090 04946-47070 Shim Kit, Anti Squeal, RR 1 -- Let’s hope this does the trick my early adopter friends! Regards, Ed |

Friends: 24 | My brakes were squeaking really bad prior to the brake recall/update. Now they don't squeak at all. But thanks for the information! |

I just had the AOB ECU update performed the same day I learned of the 'Technical Service Bulletin' on the rear brake squeak. Thanks for the feedback. Ed | |

Friends: 24 | Only heard the squeaks going in reverse, slow with cold brakes. It was getting so loud I was fearing waking the kids up in the morning. But now it is gone. |

Friends: 0 | Thank goodness. The wheel squeak is so bad on my car it's embarrassing. It not only happens on a cold start in the morning, but after I park my car for 5 minutes. Thanks for posting this. |

Friends: 0 | Tell me about it. I hope everything holds water until about 200k when it will be paid off. My commute is something awful...oh well at least I'll hopefully get a new Prius every five years or so. |

Friends: 7 | Thanks for the TSB information. I did get squeaky breaks during the cold weather, but now that it is warmed up I don't hear it near as often. I'll wait till next winter to determine if I'm still set on getting this fixed. Thanks! |

Friends: 20 | I could have sworn my squeak was from the front brakes... but like others, it has subsided lately. It's also not as cold outside. |

Friends: 0 | I kept telling my advisor that it was coming from the front as well...so we will see once they install the updated shims. The squeak was very faint when it was about 70-80 degrees here in CA for a couple weeks. It is back this week since we are in 50's and rainy. So I'd agree that cold weather is playing a role. I wonder if any owners with VIN's that have the updated shims from production can report if this truly is a non-issue for them? BTW, I love my Prius but I agree with Darenko that it is a bit embarrassing when my shiny new green machine is squeaking through our parking lot as I take my Honda and GM loving co-workers out for lunch.
