I ran the tank to the normal refill level (usually one bar blinking). Then, using the ODO reading, I calculated the number of miles driven between refills. Using the amount of gasoline I refilled with, I was able to calcualte the MPG. It shouldn't be too far off what the MFD would have shown. |

In the event that it's the latter, allow me to explain a little better since I did seem to skim quite a bit up there. We'll start with a completely filled tank and an ODO showing 15,478. Approximately 200 miles into the tank, I hit the [RESET] button or whatever. The numbers on the MFD are now officially bumpkiss. Refill occurs about 300 miles later and requires 9.8 gallons. The ODO shows 15,982. This means that I traveled 504 miles, consumed 9.8 gallons, and averaged a paultry 51.43 MPG. It's purely a measurement of how far I drove since the last refill and how much gas it took to get there. Unfortunately, if you do not have the ODO reading from the most recent refill, you can't do the math.

Anyway, I found it pretty interesting to split up a couple tanks, and reset after each little trip. Okay, it's 20 cents to go to the library and back, 50 cents to work this way, 75 cents that way. I used trip A to get the mileage to the tenth (then added .05 to round correctly) and trip B to make sure I was still accurate for the whole tank. You can check out the 2nd sheet in my spreadsheet if you're interested. | |

My Car: Package: Nominated 0 Times in 0 Posts TOTM Awards: 0 Friends: 0 | I'm still on my first tank and wondering if I should press 'reset' when I ultimately stop for a fill-up. What do most people do here? Reset with every fill-up, or never reset to see the lifetime average? No comment on 'premature reset'. ![]() |
