I finally compared all the different versions of Daniel's "five
stages of Prius hybrid operation" document, picked the most complete
one, annotated it a little, and threw it up for grabs at
http://techno-fandom.org/~hobbit/cars/five-stages.txt
since the original KB article here seems to have finally fallen
victim to the offshore crackers. I've stuck a link to it and the
now-404ing original in my "linkfarm".

Thanks. I'd printed this out once before, but of course I can never locate hardcopy when I want it.

I've saved it to the hard disk now.

Thanks for reposting. I have an editorial comment and a question. Editorially I would replace 34 MPH with 41 MPH, or at least note the difference between the 2000-2003 Prius, and the later generation. Because the max RPM of MG1 was increased to 10,000 RPM, the maximum speed without running or turning the ICE is about 41 MPH.

There seems to be a change in operation within S1. I only notice it when I'm starting the car cold in a parking garage, but for the first minute or so there seems to be a higher than normal resonance from the air intake (the ICE sounds more like a sewing machine). I'm guessing that the valve timing is being adjusted to minimize the time required to warm up the ICE. Not that anything is wrong, I'm just curious.

What that metallic sound is, in fact, is from the very retarded
spark timing. I used to hear this while fiddling with the timimg
in older cars; it was indicative that I was *way* off the peak.
Some of the combustion is probably still happening by the time
the exhaust valve opens; some of the prius_technical_stuff guys were
referring to it as "flames roaring down the exhaust header". Well,
it does definitely get the catalytics heated up in a hurry, which is
the whole point.

On cold start up the can view shows about 0.7 gal/hour fuel burn at idle for just over a minute. Then it drops quite rapidly to around 0.2 gal per hour.

It is written for 2004- Prius.
The 34 mph is nothing relating to the 41 mph ICE spinning speed.
If you drive above 34 mph, the S3 idling check ceremony is suspended.

Thanks for the information Ken.

It's probably because I've been in S4 when it happens. With a light load, I can stealth up to 41 MPH before the ICE has to spin. If I'm in a no load condition (downhill) I can hyperstealth with the ICE spinning, but if there is any load at all, the ICE typically fires up since it has to be turning anyway.
