It's well know that the Vetronix Mastertech MTS3100 is the "official"
OEM tool aka the "toyota handheld tester" in the US, but what the
heck is this? It is part of the kit used by a guy in the
Ukraine, and apparently toyota folks over there get a somewhat
different tool than the US. Can any of our EU colleagues provide
some insight?

Here's another link to a little more info:

Looks to be entirely touch-screen based; I wonder how long that's
likely to hold up in a busy shop environment... it's pretty well
known that PDA-based tools crap out in very short order.

In Japan, The official tool is called "TaSCAN", Toyota's P/N is 09991-70200 (274,400 JPyen).

From Ken's sketch, looks like Japanese dealers use the same/similar scan tool as the Europeans. I guess we are the one with the "weird" scan tool?

Iiiiinteresting. Looks like the same widget, all right. Not cheap,
either. But word on the street is that Toyota has flushed Vetronix
as the stateside OEM, and is rolling out something else -- anyone
know what exactly that is yet? I heard a vague mumble of "SPX" or
Snap-on, but haven't heard the real deal so far.

My local Tech said there would be a new Scan Tool comming. Faster and much easier to use. Could this be what he is talking about?

from this TSB posted by galaxee, http://priuschat.com/TSB-BR001-07-Brake-ac...ise-t30143.html, page 2 of the PDF said something about ordering SPX/OTC CAN interface tools. That might be it?

The new scan tool is called TechStream. It is a Panasonic Toughbook notebook computer installed in a SnapOn designed Vehicle Interface Module / protective cage which has the ODB II /DLC 3 cable on it. It is INCREDIBLE!!! Wireless internet connection which gives the Toyota Tech the ability to connect to the car, retrieve DTC's, view live data from the car, record data from any and all sensors, graph the data, send the data to other locations, (Tech Assist engineers etc.) program keys, program remotes, reprogram ECUs, reprogram Immobilisers, (both reprograms require TIS connectivity, which use to mean hook up the scan tool and bounce back and forth from the TIS computer to the car. Now it can all be done sitting in the driver seat) We are one step closer to Star Trek here, and I have only scratched the surface of the TechStream's abilities. As a Toyota Tech, I even considered buying my own TechStream ($6500.00!! Ouch!!) but then found out the one cost that stopped me. $1000.00 a year per TechStream to be connected to ToyoNet which provides 50% of the abilities of the tool. Without that connection, the tool is crippled. It becomes a fancy codepuller.
