Prius Gurus:

Does anyone have the secret sauce programming instructions for a Prius Smartkey replacement for a 2007 model?

My wife lost her unit and I bought a used one on E-Bay for about $65. Now I need to program it and the dealer said they want $165 to do so. OUTRAGEOUS! At least I saved on the cost of the unit itself which the dealer quoted at $202. I have the original key from the unit lost, just lost the main body unit off the key chain, so I will not need the key re-cut.

Does anyone have instructions on how one can program the Smart-Key on their own without using a dealer?

Thank you.

Sorry about the lost key. I purchased two used keys off of ebay and took them to my Toyota dealer to program for my 2005 Prius. To make a long story short, previously programed smart keys are almost impossible to reprogram to another Prius. The odds of it working are better than winning the lottery. I was fortunate to buy a new, never programed key off of ebay for about $100. My dealer programed the key to my car for $40. The programming instructions being passed around on the internet are for the keyless entry only. It does not work for the Prius Smart Key system. I know because I found out the hard way!
I hope this helps. Try shopping for better programming price from other Toyota dealers, they are not all the same.

You cannot program the smart key yourself. Find a dealer who will do so at the lowest price.

Be advised that a key from a different model year will NOT work.

I found a Toyota dealer here in Tempe AZ that programs the smart key for free. They also sell new ones for about $200 and program and key cut is included. Tempe Power Toyta autoloop drove 480-598-0000 They also had me come right in with no appointment. fantastic service.

Well, folks, I'd like anyone's comments on my situation. Maybe I should have known about this. Maybe someone else will learn from this.

I just found out that I need to have a my entire perfectly good computer replaced because I lost both of my smart keys (embarassing to admit) Dealership tried and tried to program new smart keys. I really do trust the dealership as it has an excellent reputation in this community ..have been family owned for years.

Besides the hassle of having car towed to dealership. (gratefully, I have towing insurance) this is going to cost just under $1500.00. Needless to say my husband and I are in a state of "mini shock" and are looking for some humor or advice to pull us through. We are fairly low maintainence people in the emotional upkeep area, but we would be willing to have a "cyber pity party" if anyone would like to join us.

Thank-you I do accept prayers.

Perhaps you should call around to see if another nearby Toyota dealer can help. Note the reset mode mentioned below; from p. 05-2166 from the 2005 repair manual:

REGISTRATION
1. DESCRIPTION OF REGISTRATION
HINT:

Smart key codes are the same as recognition codes for the wireless transmitter. Registering a smart key code enables both the smart entry system and the wireless door lock control system to be operated.

Code registration is necessary when the smart key ECU or smart key is replaced with a new one.

(a) Select the operation mode from the following:

New registration mode (when smart key ECU is replaced):

Used when the smart key ECU is replaced with a new ECU.

Add mode:

Used when a new key is added.

Re-registration mode:

After using the erase mode to erase all smart key codes previously registered, use the re-registration mode to reenter them.

Erasure mode:

Used to erase all the key codes except for the code of the master key that is used during erasure mode. Use this mode when a key is lost.

Reset mode:

Used to reset all the key codes (including master key). Use this mode when all keys are lost.

(b) Perform the code registration and the code erasure according to the flowcharts (see steps 2 and 3).
HINT:
Up to 5 master keys can be registered in the smart key ECU.
(c) Register a new key number or change the key number according to the flowcharts (see steps 4 and 5). When the smart key ECU is replaced or all the key cylinders are replaced, be sure to register a new key number or change the key number in the smart key ECU.
HINT:

A key number is a 5-digit code stamped on the key number plate.

Page 05-2170 provides the following detail about how to perform the reset procedure:

5. RESET OF SMART KEY CODE
HINT:

This reset will take approximately 16 minutes to complete.

Start
Driver door is open.

Hand-held tester operation:
1. Select Prius from menu.
2. Select SMART KEY.
3. Select ID UTILITY.
4. Select SMART CODE RESET.

Perform the following;
Read SEED NUMBER of tester screen and input it into TIS.

Hand-held tester operation:
1. Input PASS-CODE NUMBER sent from TIS according to tester screen.
2. Make sure on tester screen that the registered codes are erased from the smart ECU.
Finish reset

yeah there trying to pull a scam i bet, in this situation they are supposed to contact a toyota rep and have them come over to the actual dealership

try a different dealer

try contacting toyota directly

in the worst case scenerio and you need the ECU replaced, toyota has been known to share the cost with the car owners on a case by case basis, another good reason to try and contact toyota directly

pardon my french but i'm really f*cking sick of hearing this crap. you have a 2007, i presume from your profile, so this applies to you. read it, make them call tech support, and save yourself $1500.
the end of the "don't lose your keys or else" myth

good luck.

Toyota TSB SS003-02 states that the passcode given by the Toyota Information System is only valid for 1 event.

Questions :
1) what happens if you lose your keys a second time?
2) is it possible that the dealer botched the erasure process, making him responsible for replacing the ECU?

how many tries do you get in entering the passcode?

is it possible for the dealer to fry the ECU for entering bad codes?

if you lose your keys again, DH is pretty sure that you just get a new seed number, submit that for a new passcode, etc.

the process is handled through the scantool- if it does not get the proper authorization code, it stops the process. it leaves the ECU as is.

most dealers have no clue about this process and sell a new ECU job, hence my irritation at people being charged several car payments' worth of cash for new car keys.
