I started my car up today and about a minute into my drive I heard a noise coming from my passenger side rear battery vent. At first, I thought i had the window cracked, but I didn't. So I turned my music down and when I still heard it, I got nervous. After a couple more minutes of driving the sound stopped. I don't know if I've overlooked this in the manual or haven't researched enough, but does anyone have any ideas? Is this normal???

Could it be as simple as the fan inside the battery vent?

Just how hot was it in Herndon, VA?
Was the car parked in the sun with the windows up?
Had you driven the car earlier - where the traction battery could still have residual heat?
Did you crank-up the air conditioner when you drove away?

Any one, or a combination of the above could help explain the traction battery cooling fan coming on and going off within a few minutes . . . but exactly what did this "noise' sound like?

People need to be more specific when they post about noises. What sort of noise? Did it sound like a chipmunk, or Jimmy Hoffa locked under your cargo area? We may be good, but we're not clairvoyant.

Not in Herndon right now, this happened in Tennessee and it's about 100 degrees over here at the moment.

The noise sounded like the AC system except coming from the battery vent. So the fan theory sounds like it would make sense to me. I had just never heard of it switching on before.

And yes, the car was parked in the sun, and the AC was on as I drove off. But I had driven the car in those circumstances at least 1 million times this summer, but had never heard the noise.

The battery vent doesn't turn on very often.. but that was it. it's odd hearing it the first several times. i found it exciting. my passengers didn't hear it. they figured it was outside noise or normal vent noise. I knew it was the fan. If you start the car and climb a hill, it turns on.

It would be even more exciting if Toyota had made the fan sound like Jimmy Hoffa locked under the cargo area.

Just what would that sound like? I'm not sure I would recognize it if I heard it.

Said in a muffled voice: "help, let me out, let me out of here; I can't breathe..."

Paris Hilton locked under the cargo area: " ..." (she stops making noise when you cover her)
