I have a 2007 Prius with keyless entry and start fob. My battery went dead, got a jump, took it to Toyota dealer. They checked my battery and they said it is a good one just recharged for me. Then when I tried to start my car without inserting the key, it would not work. I asked the service person and he said I would have to come back and pay $110.00 for them to reprogram. Can I do this myself? It was working before my battery went dead. This happened once before but did not lose the keyless function.
Thanks for any help out there!

You likely have a dead fob battery (CR2032, available for <$2, if you go to the right places). Less likely is a bad/dead fob.

No way you should pay for $110 for reprogram anything at this point. Replace the fob battery first and make sure SKS isn't disabled (there's a button under the steering column that turns it on/off).

Having a dead 12 volt or disconnecting it does NOT require that the car and keys be reprogrammed. I've had my 12 volt disconnected for a long while so I could change it. All my keys still work and I have SKS.

The fact that your 12 volt went dead means that it might never be the same and is close to needing replacement anyway.

Thank you. I have replaced fob batteries before and the 'remote' action works for locking and unlocking doors, just the touching (smart key) the door and hitting the start key do not work so I do not think it is batteries.

There is a button under the steering wheel on the dash in the 2nd generation Prius (like yours). It may have gotten pushed accidently and turned off your Smart key system. Go check that and what ever position it's in now, try to put it in the other (ie, if it's in the up position, put it in the down position).

I suspect that will do the trick. You shouldn't need anything reprogrammed.

You are smarter than the Toyota tech. To be fair, he was the intake guy, not the real tech BUT you saved me a trip back there and possibly $ 110.00, so THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU !
