Does the center console open, not just slide, to reveal a compartment/storage area besides the second cup holder? Someone told me it does but mine doesn't.

    Yes it does.

Edit: I just reread the question. I'm not sure I know exactly what you are asking. Can you rephrase it?

The one I drove did, but the dealer had to show me the trick to sliding it open...

It slides back to show a second cupholder. Then it slides back more and when it stops you can flip it upwards to get into the armrest storage compartment.

Now, the second cupholder is an insert that can be removed from the front part of the center armrest storage compartment. Maybe your insert is not in there so all you have is one big open compartment area.

This insert "hangs" on some supports and can be flipped upward to get at more of the compartment. So I agree your adapter / insert is missing. I do miss the design of my 2007 prius regarding the two cup holders. Probably my only complaint or design change I notice.

Your question is not "really dumb"...not even a "little dumb".

Additionally, the small flip tray inside the main compartment can also be removed. Since the storage bin is quite a bit smaller than the GenII, many GenIII owners have removed both the cup holder and the flip tray to gain much needed room.

To answer your question, as I think that all the other answers have not answered you, yes it does lift open as well as slide back. Just as you did to release it when you slid it back, there is a release switch under the forward edge of the lid. If you pinch that, in order to trigger it, you will be able to lift the lid upwards.

However, it will not slide upwards until it is slid back all the way first. Please try that, and let us know if it helped.
