On road trip to Wyoming and Colorado and AC quit. Can't continue without repair as S Wyo and E. Colo can get to 100degr and it takes 8 hrs. Driving over mtns to only nearby dealer tomorrow and it will take 3 days and 1000-2000 $. Anyone else had this? Price is expensive for a new car--fluke or do I have to plan for this every 45000 miles? Price for new compressor and if they find metal fragments in other parts of ac system.

a/c failure is very rare, and almost non existent on lower mileage, newer vehicles. sorry for your troubles.

    I had a 1977 Camaro with a failed compressor at 12,000 miles.

That had a Harrison swash plate compressor.

I replaced it with a Japanese Sankyo rotary in 1978. The compressor was still working when I sold the car with 300,000 miles after 10 years.

I tore down the Harrison GM compressor and discovered a manufacturing defect. One of the Teflon piston rings was too small and allowed the piston to rub against the cylinder.

    Bad situations happen.

Dont take this the wrong way-just trying to help.

Perhaps you could inquire about possibly trading the vehicle in on a new one. Maybe they can somehow give you a fair deal where you dont spend all that money on the repair?

    Jusy a thought.
Good Luck and have a safe trip.

I don't remember anyone having that problem with such low mileage. If you can wait and take the car back to the dealer you got the car from and sweet talk them into talking to Toyota and maybe Toyota would help a little with the cost (some good will maybe), does not hurt to ask them. Good luck!

I use my A/C everyday, I hope this not an issue with them?

It's the "luck of the draw."

Most air conditioners lead long and uneventful lives.

The AC works fine in my 1998 Mazda MPV with 200K on it.

I charged it only once 19 years, ago. I "overcharged" it to the high limit just because I wanted to.

    I haven't serviced it since.

I installed my first air conditioner in my family car when I was 18. I bought the "Comfy Kit" out of a Popular Mechanics ad and have been working in air conditioners since. Except for electronic controls, they have not changed much since the days of Willis Carrier.

You have a good point in suggesting trading it for a new car if possible, if the person can afford to do it and if a decent deal could be had. Tough call.

Probably just get it repaired and continue on with your trip if you can. Just one of those things.

Why isn't this a warranty issue?

Its outside the warranty, but could ask the dealer to submit it as a good will claim.

Just think how much a trip to the dentist can cost. Doesn't change anything with your current predicament, but might put it in perspective.

I will say this from experience....

IF you go to a 3rd party to work on your A/C in ANY car (because it's "cheaper"), always insist that every part going in is OEM from the manufacturer.

    1. They aren't that different in price.
    2. They are made to manufacturer's specs, and pretty much are the same parts put in on the assembly line.
    3. Even if the OEM part comes with no warranty any longer than an aftermarket producer, the odds are it will hold up as well as the average OEM part put in when the car is manufactured (normal for an A/C system to last 10 years or longer with nothing more than topping the R-134a after several years of use). Aftermarkets tend to fail shortly after the warranty period. They simply ARE NOT built to last as long.
    4. Even if an aftermarket part can be bought with a "lifetime replacement" guarantee....(1) it covers ONE replacement and (2) it DOES NOT pay for the cost of other parts you must replace, evacuation and recharge or labor (unless it fails in the time the shop warranties the work).

I paid over $700 to rebuild my A/C in the truck when it gave up the ghost. It failed again (the compressor pretty much bust apart from the inside) shortly after the 2-year warranty the shop gave for the work. I wasn't going to pay another $700+ to fix it again given the truck is over 200K on the clock.

There is a difference when it comes to specialized parts for foreign made vehicles.

A lot of times, for example, it is the same Denso made part that is supplied OEM with Toyotas, at a sizeable discount.

Update: dealer said complete AC system ruined with metal fragments from compressor throughout system, $6000 (incl 16 hrs of labor+complete AC replacement) HOWEVER, Toyota will pay total cost! Since reg warranty for non drive train was 36k, and I'm at 45k, they did not have to, so it seems to be a goodwill gesture on Toyota's part, for which I'm happy and grateful! Only cloud is I may have to have rest of family go on without me and I fly to Sacramento from Denver to catch up if parts don't arrive tomorrow. But small price compared with 1-2 grand I thought I'd pay.
