Check engine..

    Hello, today my check engine light turned on. I opened the hood ( Not like I know anything about cars, but doesn't hurt to look for obvious stuff I guess) and there was a bubbling sound. I followed the sound to what I think is the inverter pump? It's like a tank smack dab in the middle and has a pretty thick tube coming out. The liquid inside looked to be bubbling or boiling. Is this normal? I've checked the gas cap and tightened it and restarted it so I don't think that's it. Any ideas on common problems? It's at about 160,000 miles.

    Yes there is suppose to be turbulence in the reservoir. Make sure it's filled to the proper level. While you're there, check you engine oil level, make sure it's not low

    You need to retrieve the code that's causing the check engine light.

    I plan on checking the codes out tomorrow, I just wanted to know if I should start freaking out or not. It seemed to be driving fine.

    Yes, a good start would be to replace the iridium spark plugs especially if they are original equipment.

    However that is not enough. P0441 and P0446 mean that there is something wrong with your fuel tank. Here is the full list of possible issues:

     Fuel tank cap is incorrectly installed

     Fuel tank cap is cracked or damaged

    Vacuum hose is cracked, blocked, damaged or disconnected

     Open or short in vapor pressure sensor circuit

    Vapor pressure sensor

     Open or short in EVAP VSV circuit

    EVAP VSV

     Open or short in CCV circuit

    CCV

     Open or short in VSV for purge flow switching valve circuit

     VSV for purge flow switching valve

     Fuel tank is cracked or damaged

     Charcoal canister is cracked or damaged

     Fuel tank over fill check valve is cracked or damaged

    ECM

    I noticed the other day that the cap didn't click when I turned it all the way. It just sort of got really tight. Is it supposed to click? It seems like it did before. Also if that's not it, what's my next step? Don't know much about cars but I'm a pretty smart college kid so with instructions I should be able to figure it out.

    Look at the fuel tank cap to see if the rubber O-ring is damaged. If there is any damage, get a new cap at your Toyota dealer's parts department.

    If the O-ring is OK, then tighten the cap until it clicks once.

    Okay this time it clicked. It wasn't clicked though, so that might have been that part. So I should change the spark plugs and see if that fixes it?

    Yes. Buy only the correct NGK or Denso iridium plugs, as listed in the owner's manual.

    Okay, so last night I tightened the gas cap. Today the check engine light isn't on. I guess everything is okay?
