    Noticed some minor scratches on the drivers-side "A" pillar. Curiously, there are none on the passenger's side. I assume (!) they came from dirt, etc. thrown up from the road, but why the one side only? I typically drive in the center lane when possible, otherwise I'm in the right lane. Pix attached.

    If that were my car I would make time to trim the shrubbery along our driveway. It's amazing how fast it grows.

    That's assuming you haven't been patronizing a certain car wash.

    No bushes and I hand wash the car myself (no automated car wash). No scratches on the passenger side, which I found peculiar, considering how symmetrical the car is...

    It does not look like road debris did it. A teenager could be the culprit. They have a lot of time on their hands and don't know what to do with it and they do things like that.

    If true, then it must have been a pretty wimpy kid. These are very, very fine scratches.

    That looks like a high pressure jet wash hose scratch. When you pull the hose across your car it will have grit on it and it scratches. That's why it's on one side only too. I bet you jet wash your car? Yes?

    Probably just one of those things you will never know. Maybe someone got out of a car that was parked next to you with something in their hands and went against your car and scraped it. I suppose you could just keep guessing at things that could have happened. I hate things like that as all of us do. Maybe you could take it to a body shop and they could buff it out.

    Because I recognise them. I remember ruining many an A pillar with a jet wash hose in the taxi job even if you're really careful. Mainly it was when using the commercial versions with the big metal swing arm that suspended the hose. The hose would reach across and slap against the pillars or the bonnet/hood causing those nasty scratches.

    I then took to putting the car through normal car washes which whilst scratching the car, the scratches were usually smaller. When you have to wash a car every day you take the easier option.

    If someone's (or it's you) washing your car, when they reach to get the middle of the roof, maybe a belt buckle got it? Just an example. Really could be anything, that's the frustration. ;)

    When you live in Chicago with these hellish winters you take the easier option as well. Run it through the best car wash you can find and just be glad you could wash it and get the road salt off. You sure don't hand wash it. I put mine through an automatic brushless car wash.

    It could be crows and their sharp claws.

    I'm favoring the jet wash/swing arm/dragging hose theory, since I use one occasionally. Thanks, Grumpy!

    I am discounting the crows w/sharp claws theory, but nice try... ;)

    I have used the car washes Grumpy is talking about. I think I buy his theory as well. When you pull that arm around the hose really slaps the side of your car, right in area those scratches are located

    Not sure what yours are like but it was this kind of jet wash I was refering to, though it doesn't really show the swing arm;

    You'll notice you pull in side on causing you to have to pull the hose over your car to wash the far side.

    It's either a car wash or from the hose on the air pump at a petrol station. The dirt sticks to the rubber hose and drags across the a pillar of the car. I know cause my car has them. The bonnet usually suffers a similar fate, especially on a Prius as the bonnet is so low

    Gas stations and hoods :)
