My battery pack died at exactly 9 years 5 months and 150,750 miles. The local Toyota dealer will not honor the California warrantee. Of course this outrage will not stand without a fight, but I was wondering if the forum members had a similar issue and have any advice.

    thanks

What's the outrage? You're outside of the extended CARB warranty.

You should contact ToyotaHQ and ask for them for a courtesy Goodwill warranty. There was a member just this month, same situation as you, 150,xxx miles and out of warranty. They were able to get a FREE hv battery and paid Toyota dealers for the labor charge. Came out to about $400.

As per JC above, yes we have quite a few stories of 50% off from Toyota in cases like this close to the line.
And we have some case where the dealers or Toyota did not help.

I don't know the logic of who wins and loses but you have to try for it. One thing that probably matters is aside from the fact you live in CA now, the car must have been registered in CA from the start, and other CARB rules Toyota has. But on the surface you're close on this.

Prius drivers have difficulty with humor, so I'll opine with the assumption that you're being fully serious with the "outrage" portion of your question and then get to the advice:
If I were the dealership or the OEM, I'd apologize profusely for honoring my warranty, and give you a certificate for some notional amount off of a replacement battery.
I'm sorry if this offends, but if Toyota builds a car and slaps a warranty on it, and they honor that warranty, and then some foreign government shanks them with an additional warranty requirement that they also honor, then they have held up their end of the log.
Of course, you can go down to the dealership and pitch a damnit and they might toss you a bone to get you out of the office, but if you're still driving a 9 year old car that you love enough to pitch a fit over, then you're not exactly the 'repeat customer' that they're looking for to sell cars to every 3-4 years.

My advice: (Current Street Value: <$0.02)
Buy a $1500 re-maned unit and either self-install or pay some hybrid shop a few hundred to do likewise.
It's not tough, it will add probably more than $1500 to the value of the car, and you will still have a very frugal, very dependable car that you can use for another 5-10 years.

    Good Luck!

I agree. Some reconditioners will do it for $1000 installed with a warranty. The real question is if the OP will have already told the dealer to change it before he gets back to the thread (if he gets back).

...either personally you have to ask Toyota, but yes you can ask the dealer service to ask Toyoyta on your behalf if it could be considered under the warranty grace period. I did this with my VW headlight just asked my service guy if this could be considered by VW he asked and it was. I was like a month over warranty.

It looks like the OP is a troll. All this help we're trying to give him is in vain. I believe this is someone just trying to press our buttons and stir up a controversy.

I agree. Why do people come this forum only when they have problem and only post once and never to come back.

Someday the search function might be employed by somebody with a real problem in search of a real solution.
    Perhaps even successfully.

That's why we log solutions and advice. :D

Not you, kinglew, the troll comments are referring to the "OP" (original poster) who started this thread and has not returned.

KINGLEW you offered good info about a cheaper price on the Dorman than I've heard before. I thought they were $2000+ not including installation.
