I just had the 30,000 mile service performed on my Prius and the dealer suggested that I have the air mass airflow sensor serviced. This seems a little premature to me how can I verify the requirement/need for the service. Is it a service that I could before myself?

I doubt it needs cleaning, but this is a very easy service.
Just pull it out and put in a baggy with isopropanolol. Swish the fluid gently into the part, let dry, and re-install.

    5 minutes of your time.

it's not in the recommended maintenance. sounds more like a wallet service they're trying to do.
