    • Steady growth - Jetta diesel, Passat diesel, Sonata hybrid
I don't see any other patterns over the past four months. However, I'm getting curious about the Sonata.

Note, some of the diesels apparently are changing their model identifiers. I don't do name changes so they will show a history of zeros.

I'll post the graphs later but some patterns showed up:
    • 'Toyota Prius C' has a good trend, the June dip has all but been wiped out. The 'Prius C' and 'Jetta Diesel' are in a horse race.
    • 'Ford C-MAX' ennui has flattened out at the same time as accurate MPG numbers have shown up. Perhaps there is an 'honesty' effect.
    • 'Volt' sales have a good trend but look manic-depressive. It is as if they are bouncing between some sales stops.
Otherwise, there appears to be solid sales growth over the past three months since that curious dip in June.

Look at the jump in Prius Plug-in sales. Almost a 1000 increase in sales from July (817) to August (1,791). That's more than a doubling of increase in sales.

Prius C did a nice jump also from 3,797 to 5,478.

First, the prius c is the real deal, well maybe not a prius, but the aqua/prius c accounted for a large percentage of toyota's hybrid growth since its introduction. A weak yen allows toyota to discount it right now. It hit a different segment that wanted hybrids and killed the insight in the US.

The c-max since its introduction has out performed expectations and propelled ford to a clear number 2 in hybrid sales, well ahead of honda, hyundai, and gm. IMHO the sleazy mpg trick of using the fusion hybrid numbers and not testing it has hurt sales. It appears to be a good combination of handling and mpg in a quirky euro tall car package. Sales this year between hybrids and phevs in us are 26,072. I expect a near term bottom, then increasing sales, especially of the energi.

The volt erratic sales behavior, has been there since the start
Chevrolet Volt Sales Figures - GOOD CAR BAD CAR
GM seems to have worked out some of their logistics kinks, and also appear to have gotten dealers better trained. The kinks of new car introductions and pricing also appear over. Sales from here forward should be better behaved.

Diesel cars were the high mpg alternate to traditional gas ones long before hybrids came to market. They and hybrids are both options for reducing oil use by an individual. There is also a CNG car on the list, and Bob, you might want to tag the Civic as such on your table or people will assume it's the gas or even hybrid entry.

    Can't edit.

The HybridCars report lists the hybrid, diesel, and CNG seperately. Bob is compiling them together by sales total with the past 3 months of data.

So very appropriate to include in table, I think.
Be ready for more diesel cars on the road

Posted on: 08-29-2013 by: John Keller

According to a recent CNBC article, next year we can expect to see a lot more diesel cars on the roads across the US. The 2014 US model year should have double the selection of previous years, with 40 diesel models on the market by the end of 2014. Diesel SUV’s are likely to see the biggest increase in sales.

For a long while, Volkswagen has had the majority of diesel models in the US. But GM is planning to offer new diesel models, as is Chrysler, Mazda, Nissan and Audi. Some experts predict that by 2018 diesel vehicle sales could represent 10% of all new vehicle sales.

Diesel technology typically boosts mileage by 30%, helping auto manufacturers meet federal mileage regulations. These regulations require a combined 39 mpg fuel mileage rating in the window across their model offerings by 2025.
Many diesel models can go 600 to 800 miles on a single tank, dramatically altering the behavior of gasoline consumers who stop to fill up twice as often as these models.

What does this mean from a fuel price management perspective? First, it may be a good time to start planning to add diesel to your product offering if you don’t already offer it, especially if your stores are in an area where SUV’s and trucks are popular. Second, monitor the ratio of diesel fuel sales to gasoline fuel sales from a historical perspective, and see if the current sales trends are tipping the balance in the favor of Diesel. If it hasn’t started yet, depending on your markets, you’re likely to see the shift over the next five years and beyond.

Ok, here are the promised graphs:
The hatchback scale is on the right. It is so dominate that it is the sum of the next, top three. But you can kinda see the horse races:
    • Jetta diesel vs Prius C
    • Passat diesel vs Camry hybrid
    • Ford Fusion vs Prius v
So here is the lower section blown up:

Modern diesels don't stink. The ULSD itself doesn't stink. Most of the stink I cross on the road is from gassers burning oil, running rich, or have a bad cat.

When 2016 rolls around we will hear how the smelly, smoke belching diesels are from the old days of 2013, but the 'modern' diesels are *clean*

Clean coal / clean diesel are some of the biggest oxymoron terms ever dreamed up by left wing politicians. Sorry diesel lovers, if new diesels are claimed to be so clean, why are they looking at restricting diesel vehicles in some of the Euro cities? Maybe I should post that diesel article separately for discussion.
The thing is, Obama admin has challenged auto makers to go to 54 CAFE MPG.
    >>The auto makers have basically agreed to move in this direction.
Note that the primary goal is not cleaner air, it is petroleum conservation and/or avoidance.
If we get to 54 CAFE MPG but with a whole boat load of particulates/smog in the air, I will be one ticked off motorist..

Just wanted to clarify that the 'i' between E-Class Diesel and Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid is the Mitsubishi i-Miev?

    This is my favorite EV.
I always wondered why was never on any of the dashboards.
If that is it, I am surprised sales are so low........IIRC, it's the lowest priced EV out there.

What models and years were they?

If diesels have to meet the same emission levels as gasoline cars, then there won't be any more pollution than is gasoline cars were sold. The 2013 Passat and 2014 Golf TDI are both ULEV in CARB states. The same as the majority of Toyota's non-hybrids.

    Wxman posted this at Cleanmpg:

The data was recorded during the '90s. Long before DPFs were required. The diesel exhaust portion includes off road(farm and construction equipment, generators, etc.) and on road sources. A gasoline car produces fewer particulates than a diesel one, but it does produce them. Since they vastly out number diesels, they end contributing ten times as much as the diesel.

If diesels become popular, they won't be adding the particles because of the DPF. There is some, but they now emit less than a gasser.
