Mine did it a week ago, 2015 Prius four with 2700 miles on it. Dealer found no codes and acted like they have never heard about it before.

Believe it or not, it just happened to me in a non-hybrid car, RAV4.
I pulled it out of garage in AM to make room for another car i worked on. it run for 10 seconds and sat all day outside. the car was very hard to start at the end of the day and rough idle with misfiring.
i had only 2 instances of that in prius in 70,000 miles. both times, the same thing, engine run short time and then it set for hrs.
the only thing different, it feels more than knocking due to the feedback between ICE and electric motors in a hybrid.
either way, it's an user error.

I'm so grateful for this forum... I just bought a 2012 PiP with 50K on it... it's about 15° this morning, and the motor sounded so broken... thankfully, I have been reading posts on here for years and was familiar with the problem. I waited patiently, and after about a minute, it stopped and ran silky smooth all the way to the bus station. I'm gonna call my local dealer to let them know about it, but doesn't sound like there's much that will be done. I'll have to look into how to clean the EGR valve...

that's a crummy way to start with your new pip! make sure you don't power down while the engine is running.

I agree, if you've just turned it on after X number of hours sitting and the engine starts, let it run at least a couple minutes before shutting it off. That should avoid the moisture buildup in the engine that causes the knocking.

On a related note, I've noticed my PiP will start the engine no matter what if it's below about 30 degrees. Above that it will stay in EV when turned on, if charged. I've also read somewhere that the engine will run if so many days have elapsed since last warmup cycle, I believe it's 2-3 days.

Great to know these things! Thank you! I was having too much fun driving in EV mode while running errands, that it had been a while since the motor had a chance to be warm, and good to know about the below-30-degrees deal... I'll let it do its thing instead of trying too hard to stay in EV...

You're welcome. I *always* have some charge when at home, even if not full, so that's how I noticed the temperature thing. I don't go 124 miles without running the engine anyway so I did not know that one.

Staying in EV is/was more of an issue with the standard Prius since you have about 1.5 seconds to tap the EV button after turning the ignition on to attempt to stay in EV.
    And it didn't always work.
