Ok, my wife says this was a terrible incident, I say good riddance. Why am I wrong?

cbs2.com - Lamborghini Plunges Off 101 Freeway, Driver Killed

Some rich a-hole spends a couple of hundred thousand dollars and then thinks he can put everyone else at risk by driving like a maniac? Whenever someone whizzes by myself, I always think that the roads would be better off without someone who drives illegally like that. Now the roads WILL have one less maniac and a one less car that spews crazy CO2 at that.

Perhaps this should qualify for a Darwin Award, except usually the Darwin Awards are much more elaborate stories.

What if it were a poor person in an econobox 'driving like a maniac?' Would that still be natural selection at work?

    Yes.

Because these maniacs can also take the innocent with them.

The article does not say that the driver was speeding. If he was indeed driving like a maniac, I have little sympathy for him. But merely driving an expensive car does not make him a bad person. Certainly, I disapprove of powerful cars. But let's not be too quick to wish death on someone merely for that. You may assume that the only reason for owning a Lamborghini is to drive it like a maniac, but that assumption might not always be valid.

I had the "pleasure" of watching a high-speed collision when I was in high school. My friends and I, trained in first aid, were not only the first at the scene but the only ones at the scene for several minutes due to the remote location.

Because of the wreck, the two drunk holes in the truck served time in jail. Two of the four individuals in the sedan are still in thier pine boxes.

I always feel sorry for the innocents who were minding their own business until that one hole ruins it all. And we never know when it's coming.

The news reports on local television say he was traveling at very high speeds, enough to jump the freeway, fly through the air and hit an adjacent parking structure.

If it was your son making just one mistake in his life, would you see it differently?

I had one very close call with disaster due to youthful stupidity. It can be cured without death being necessary.

There were enough negative comments in your initial post about 'rich assholes' and hundred-thousand dollar cars that I wasn't sure if this is what you were railing against, or the irresponsible driving. So, I asked the question to clarify my understanding.

How many innocent people died in your beloved iraq war? Oh that's right, they're all terrorists to you.

Not as bad as I would feel if that a-hole would have killed my son.

Would you feel the same sadness if your son was an innocent bystander victim by this creep or if your son were the creep?

Heck yes. I would feel the same sadness. But my actions to stop the stupid driving would be intense in the later case.

All drivers are subject idiotic driving on the road. 40,000 deaths a year is sickening. However, I do not want to become a person that considers some of these 40,000 to be deserved. I was hoping you were not going down that path.

    Thank you Wildkow.

Sadly, some on this board seem to take pleasure from that fact. That's just disgusting on any level.

Because someone died. It does sound as though the driver was doing something stupid, however stupidity doesn't generally carry the death penalty.

Frankly, I'd offer sympathy to the driver's friends and family and hope that some good can be made to come of this.

Excellent proposal, Hobbit. I would suggest, however, adding two more points, for a kind of double-three:

    Three seconds interval.
    Zero tolerance on DUI
Stop all types of distracted driving: when driving your full attention is on the driving.
