Just when we thought the media controlled the minds and thoughts of the auto-buying public, the American public has fought back by embracing financial incentives and boosting Prius sales by 27% in March. With incentives in place like $229 lease rates and other customer loyalty bonuses, it looks like John Q. Consumer made a decision on his next car based on his wallet and not what his TV news was telling him. Overall, Toyota sales were up an astounding 40% last month compared to March 2009. Also, Prius year-to-date sales are up 17% in 2010 compared to 2009. Full press release and embedded sales chart below:

This is a little misleading on the year to year number because last March Prius buyers are holding off waiting for the Gen III. More meaning number is the increase over February numbers.

How in the world could sales of the Prius and other Toyota vehicles be up????? If you listen to the news media, Toyota is doomed to failure because their cars are full of life threatening defects.

Oh well, I guess that the public has figured out that the news media doesn't always tell the truth...

I'm not quite sure prius sales are an intelligence test. What does the 40% increase in ford mean compared to 41% increase in Toyota.

Last year was a really bad year for car companies. I've read much more on these forums about the media and government being out to get toyota than I've seen. Maybe the buying public does not watch the same news or view it the same way as people on this forum. Bad year plus large financial incentives in a recovery mean increased sales.

Sweet deals lure car buyers, lift sales in March

I'd post the better wsj article but it is a pay thing.

The gen III is a better fit for the american market than gen II. If its priced right and has availability then sales should be higher than gen II. It doesn't really have any direct competition. The TCH unlike the prius, has competition from the fussion hybrid and upcoming sonata hybrid. Toyota may need to redesign or drastically cut prices to sell as many as before. Year over year changes on a redesign may reflect more on the redesign than the media.

I think those who don't want to buy a foreign car, are buying Ford. That would explain the 40% increase in Ford

"...news media doesn't always tell the truth..."

On the other hand what if the Toyota "sales are up" press release is simply another form of PR damage control and sales are actually...

Toyota sold cars because toyota customers jumped on the large increases in toyota incentive spending. It will be interesting to see what happens to toyota sales over the next 12 months. Any takers on a bet?

With the return of rising gas prices, my bet is that new Prius sales will continue to climb.

Gas prices will not get much higher in the near term, maybe another 30-40 cents max.
